What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shop Helper / Grinder position at ADM Custom Metal?
ADM has been in business since 1983, and we're looking to add a Grinder / Finisher to our team.
This is a hands-on production role focused on grinding and finishing welded sheet metal parts — but ADM isn't a typical shop. When grinding work is light, you won't be sent home or stuck waiting. You'll step in to help our shipping team get orders out the door, and cross-train into other parts of the shop like PEM insertion, tapping, and light assembly. The right person uses this role as a doorway into the rest of the trade — and there's a real path forward from here if you want it.
WHY ADM
- Over 40 years in business — stable, established, and still growing
- A real entry point into sheet metal fabrication — we'll train you from day one
- Exposure to multiple shop processes so you build a broader skill set, not just one
- Path to grow into welding, machine operation, or other skilled roles as you prove yourself
- Employer covers 75% of healthcare premium for employee (after 90 days)
- Simple IRA retirement plan (after 6 months)
- Paid time off per NJ law and paid company holidays
- Steady day shift, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, Monday through Friday
- Small-shop culture focused on quality workmanship — most of our team has been here for years
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Grind and finish welded sheet metal parts — cleaning up welds, smoothing edges, and prepping parts for the next step
- Inspect your own work and catch defects before they move down the line
- When grinding work is light, help the shipping team pack, label, and stage orders for outbound freight
- Cross-train and pitch in on PEM inserting, tapping, and light assembly as needed
- Keep your workstation, tools, and PPE in good working order
- Follow shop safety practices and pitch in wherever the shop needs you
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- No experience required — we'll train you on the grinders and the rest
- Reliable, on-time, and ready to put in a full day's work
- Comfortable switching tasks throughout the day — this role isn't the same thing every hour
- Good attention to detail and willingness to self-check work
- Able to be on your feet for a full shift and lift up to 50 lbs
- Reliable commute to Nutley, NJ 07110 (or relocating before start date)
A PATH TO GROW Grinding and finishing is where a lot of great fabricators start. As you build trust and learn the shop, you'll have the opportunity to cross-train onto welding, machine operation, and other skilled roles. The right person doesn't just leave ADM a better grinder; they leave a better fabricator.
