Overview
Adirondack Research and Green Goat Maps are seeking a highly skilled GIS Specialist to join our in-person team in Saranac Lake, NY. This position supports a wide range of geospatial work across both organizations, including environmental analysis, conservation planning, parcel-level modeling, viewshed analysis, online map development, and production of high-quality cartographic products.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, and Experience Builder, excellent spatial analysis skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-project environment. This position is central to our growing portfolio of analytical and cartographic projects.
Because our work is highly collaborative and integrated across teams, this position is on-site in our Saranac Lake office.
Primary Responsibilities
Geospatial Analysis
- Perform complex GIS analyses, including:
- Viewshed modeling
- Parcel-level prioritization and scoring
- Raster and vector processing
- Conservation and natural resource assessments
- Spatial statistics and multi-variable analysis
- Work with high-resolution DEMs, multi-county parcel datasets, ecological datasets, and protected lands layers.
- Support internal research and mapping initiatives across both Adirondack Research and Green Goat Maps.
Mapping & Cartography
- Develop high-quality maps for reports, proposals, interpretive signage, and digital platforms.
- Prepare GIS layers, symbology, and spatial files for use by the cartography and design teams.
- Assist with layout and design review to ensure map clarity and accessibility.
Online Mapping & Web Applications
- Build and maintain ArcGIS Online web maps, hosted layers, web apps, and dashboards.
- Use Experience Builder to create user-friendly interactive mapping tools.
- Support development of internal and external spatial data portals.
Data Management
- Organize, clean, and maintain geospatial datasets, geodatabases, and shared data repositories.
- Standardize incoming GIS files from various sources.
- Integrate field-collected data into GIS workflows.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with project managers, ecologists, cartographers, designers, and leadership.
- Participate in in-office project meetings and planning sessions.
- Communicate technical information clearly to team members of varying GIS backgrounds.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, planning, natural resources, or related field.
- Strong proficiency with:
- ArcGIS Pro
- ArcMap
- ArcGIS Online
- Experience Builder
- Demonstrated experience with geospatial analysis, raster processing, and spatial modeling.
- Ability to work with large, multi-source datasets.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to working in-person full-time in Saranac Lake, NY.
Preferred Qualifications
(Not Required but Helpful)
- Programming experience (Python, JavaScript, or similar).
- Familiarity with geospatial automation or workflow optimization.
- Experience with cartographic design, typography, and visual communication.
- Background working with ecological, conservation, or natural resource datasets.
- Understanding of online mapping frameworks beyond ESRI tools.
