- Service: Cardiothoracic surgery — CVICU and step-down
- Coverage period: 08/10/2026 – 13 weeks
- Orientation: Aug 10 and/or Aug 30 (7:00 AM–3:00 PM)
Typical schedule
- Clinical shift: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- On-call: Weeknights 3:00 PM – 7:00 AM; 24-hour weekend call
- Call type: Beeper

- Aug 11–13: 7:00 AM–3:00 PM weeknight call
- Sept 1–4: 7:00 AM–3:00 PM weeknight call
- Sept 5–7: 24-hour weekend call (Sept 7 is a holiday)

Patient mix & workload
- Adults and geriatrics
- Average census: 10–15 CVICU/step-down patients daily
- Typical surgical volume: 1–2 cases per day
- Responsibilities include admissions as clinically indicated, daily rounding, phone consults, and collaborative care with the cardiothoracic surgery team
Clinical expectations & procedures
- Manage postoperative and preoperative cardiothoracic surgery patients in CVICU/step-down
- Assist in cardiothoracic procedures and perform bedside tasks as approved
- Required/expected procedures: endoscopic vein harvest (EVH), temporary pacemaker removal, chest tube removal, IABP removal, arterial line placement
- Documentation in Cerner
Facility support
- Specialty backup: on-site cardiothoracic surgeon
- Support staff: dedicated cardiothoracic surgery team
- Equipment/EMR: standard cardiothoracic resources; Cerner EMR
Credentials & requirements
- Active Arizona license: PA or APRN (NP)
- Certification: NCCPA for PAs; ANCC/AANP for NPs
- Active DEA
- BLS and ACLS (AHA)
- Minimum 3 years recent cardiothoracic surgery experience with EVH
- Education:
- PAs: graduate of an accredited PA program and NCCPA certified
- NPs: graduate of an acute care NP program and RN/NP first assistant training; Arizona APRN license
Privileges, credentialing & logistics
- Hospital privileges required; credentialing typically ~30 days
- Travel, lodging, and malpractice insurance are covered
