SUMMARY:
The Portfolio Manager is a member of the Business Lending Credit Team, reporting directly to the Director of Business Lending. This role is responsible for overseeing the commercial loan portfolio’s performance, ensuring compliance, managing reporting, and serving as the lead for weekly credit-related meetings. The Portfolio Manager collaborates across departments and provides guidance to the credit team to ensure high-quality credit administration, risk mitigation, and regulatory adherence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Portfolio Oversight & Risk Management
- Monitor and manage performance of commercial loans, focusing on delinquencies, watch list, covenant tracking, and renewal pipelines.
- Conduct and oversee annual reviews.
- Develop and implement action plans for watch list and underperforming credits.
- Ensure compliance with all internal credit policies and external regulations.
Reporting & Data Management
- Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc portfolio performance reports.
- Maintain credit metrics dashboards including DSCR tracking, risk ratings, financial statements, and loan maturity schedules.
- Support internal and external audits with requested documentation and commentary.
Credit Underwriting & Approval
- Independently underwrite and recommend commercial loans and treasury requests within assigned authority.
- Conduct advanced financial statement analysis, global cash flow assessment, and collateral evaluation.
- Structure credit facilities to meet member needs and credit union risk parameters.
- Prepare and present detailed credit memorandums for management or committee approval.
Risk Assessment & Policy Adherence
- Identify key risk factors and assess borrower creditworthiness.
- Ensure credit recommendations adhere to NCUA regulations and internal loan policy.
- Recommend risk mitigations such as guarantees, collateral adjustments, or loan covenants.
Treasury Services Support
- Underwrite treasury service applications, including ACH, RDC, and wire limits.
- Perform risk reviews for new and existing treasury clients.
- Coordinate with operations to support proper onboarding and control measures.
Meeting Facilitation
- Lead the weekly Portfolio Review Meeting, facilitating risk discussions and credit strategy alignment.
- Organize and direct the Pipeline Review Meeting to support decision-making and prioritization.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for the Business Lending department, providing mentorship to analysts, business bankers and underwriters.
Credit Administration & Compliance
- Oversee credit file documentation, ensure proper risk rating justifications, and maintain audit-readiness.
- Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to manage complex credit situations and policy exceptions.
- Other tasks assigned.
Collaboration & Relationship Management
- Act as the liaison between Credit and Commercial Lending, Operations, and Compliance.
- Communicate portfolio trends, risk concerns, and opportunities to senior leadership.
- Assist with special projects, loan policy updates, and departmental planning.
- Assists in the Business Banker training program as a facilitator.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field required.
Experience:
- Minimum 5–7 years of commercial credit underwriting or portfolio management experience.
- Expert knowledge of financial analysis, loan structuring, credit policy, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and loan management systems.
Performance Expectations:
- Accurate and timely reporting of portfolio data and trends.
- Effective leadership of weekly meetings with actionable follow-ups.
- High standards of credit quality and compliance across all loan monitoring activities.
- Consistent mentorship and support for junior team members.
- Assist the team in meeting annual goals.
