Addison Smith is hiring Sheet Metal/Duct Fabrication Techs to join our growing team. These mid-level positions (2–5 years’ experience) focus on HVAC duct and sheet metal system installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance for commercial, residential, and industrial projects.
You will work directly with superintendents, foremen, journeymen, and apprentices to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality mechanical system installations.
Job Summary
The Commercial Sheet Metal Technician II is a mid-level tradesperson responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and installation of commercial and industrial HVAC ductwork and related sheet metal systems. This role requires solid field experience in reading blueprints, measuring, cutting, and installing various duct systems according to project specifications, mechanical codes, and safety standards. The Sheet Metal Tech II works under limited supervision and may assist in training or guiding entry-level technicians on job site procedures.
Responsibilities
Understands airflow, system layout, and return/supply balancing.
Diagnoses duct leaks, insulation gaps, and airflow noise.
Independently installs duct systems per plan using proper hangers and sealants.
Repairs damaged ducts, re-insulates sections, and routes ducts around piping systems.
Interprets duct design blueprints and routing plans.
Installs and adjusts manual dampers and thermostatic dampers.
Applies safety practices for sheet metal handling and confined attic spaces.
Completes daily reports, measurements, and system checks.
Applies sheet metal practices to HVAC, duct, and exhaust systems.
Troubleshoots airflow issues, equipment noise, and insulation failures.
Installs complete systems, aligns ductwork, and connects to HVAC units.
Repairs air handlers, ducts, dampers, and hangers.
Coordinates with pipefitters for combined layouts.
Interprets shop drawings, specifications, and installation details.
Installs and adjusts dampers, actuators, and fire/smoke dampers.
Completes material checklists, daily reports, and change notes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Technical understanding of ductwork, sheet metal, airflow, and system balancing.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications.
Familiarity with SMACNA standards and OSHA safety practices.
Team-oriented, clear communicator, and proactive problem solver.
Ability to work safely in confined spaces, attics, and active construction sites.
