Senior Accounting Associate – Operations Accounting
A well-capitalized, publicly traded organization is seeking a Senior Accounting Associate – Operations Accounting to support and oversee accounting and analysis for operating expenses and gathering & transportation costs. This role is ideal for a technically strong, analytically minded accountant who enjoys working closely with operations and digging into complex, high‑volume cost drivers.
Role Overview
The Senior Accounting Associate will focus on operating expense (LOE) and gathering & transportation (G&T) costs, with an emphasis on cost visibility, analytical insight, and modernization of accounting processes through automation and technology.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own accounting and analytical review of LOE and G&T costs across multiple assets and legal entities.
- Oversee accounting for field‑driven expenses, including but not limited to: gathering and transportation fees, compression and treating costs, gas lift, salt water disposal (SWD), repairs and maintenance, electricity, chemicals, and other production‑related costs.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations related to operational activity.
- Perform period‑over‑period variance analysis and clearly explain cost drivers related to volumes, contracts, vendors, and operational initiatives.
- Partner closely with Operations, Field Management, Accounts Payable, Commercial, and FP&A.
- Provide reporting and analysis to improve cost transparency, trend visibility, and decision‑making.
- Support public‑company audits with audit‑quality documentation and explanations.
- Execute and maintain SOX‑compliant internal controls.
- Identify and implement process improvements and automation using ERP systems, Hyperion, BI tools, AI applications, and advanced Excel.
Qualification:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 3–6 years of progressive accounting or analytical experience
- Strong understanding of operating expense and cost‑based accounting
- Experience working with high‑volume, operationally driven data
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities
Preferred:
- CPA or active CPA candidate
- Public company and/or public accounting experience
- Familiarity with LOE, gathering, compression, and transportation cost structures
