Role Description: The Assistant Controller is a full-time, on-site role based in the Charleston, South Carolina.
- Maintain the general ledger across multiple entities, ensuring accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Execute month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Perform cost allocations across entities and properties to ensure accurate expense distribution.
- Reconcile intercompany activity and process expense reimbursements.
- Process bi-weekly payroll, including payroll entries, reconciliations, and reporting in coordination with HR and external providers.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Assist with external audits, fax filings, and compliance with financial reporting standards and internal policies.
- Track and reconcile commission payments.
- Assist with the development, documentation, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across the accounting function.
- Contribute to process improvement and automation initiatives, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce manual work.
- Collaborate with property management, leasing, and operations teams to gather information needed for accurate reporting.
Qualifications
- 5 years of accounting experience preferably in real estate, property management or a multi-entity environment
- Hands on experience with accounts payable and multi-entity cost allocation
- Candidates should possess knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and compliance processes relevant to real estate and property management operations.
- Experience documenting workflows and contributing to SOP developments a plus
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, complex formulas)
- Experience with property management or ERP accounting software preferred
- Candidates should possess clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across accounting, property management, and development teams.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field required.
- CPA required.
