For the Produce assistant department manager, this means overseeing the job of the Produce department manager; and the departments operations, managing the team, ensuring quality of products, streamlining workflow’s and delivering exceptional customer experiences to achieve business goals.
Your Day-to-Day
- Order produce and related items, ensuring accurate invoicing and high-quality deliveries.
- Maintain proper stock levels and ensure all items are priced, signed, and attractively displayed.
- Keep the entire department clean, organized, and safe, including coolers, prep rooms, and dock areas.
- Delegate tasks to staff and follow up to ensure completion while fostering team accountability.
- Train team members on proper product handling, display techniques, and the importance of rotation.
- Provide excellent customer service and ensure all staff greet and assist customers courteously.
- Support store operations by cooperating with other department managers and store leadership.
- Promote professionalism through appropriate conduct, appearance, and strong leadership.
- Lead by example with friendliness, ambition, and a supportive attitude toward staff
- Assist with job interviews, disciplinary conversations, and employee development to support individual and company goals.
- Train and support new and existing Produce associates to build a skilled and effective team.
- Supporting and filling in as active manager when department manager is absent
- Assist with staff scheduling & if assigned, ensure payroll accuracy to support operational & budget goals.
- Handle unexpected issues like call-outs, employee conflicts, & inventory discrepancies promptly & effectively
- Respond to customer complaints to ensure satisfaction and uphold the store’s reputation.
- Manage inventory levels and purchasing to meet customer needs while minimizing waste.
- Support Produce associates, leads, and supervisors to ensure smooth and efficient department operations.

- Knowledge of all Produce products and offers; and their whereabouts on the sales floor
- Produce professional leadership experience
- Awareness and driving support office initiatives
- Windows programs and communication tools
- Work collaboratively, communicate, and lead a team of co-workers alongside management
- Ability to demonstrate, encourage, and set the example of Adams’ culture and values
- Exhibit enthusiasm, positivity and vast knowledge about Adams’ products and quality
Working Conditions
- Safely use U-boats, pallet jack, knives, and any other equipment used to operate the Produce department
- Consistently move, adjust, and position items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for duration of shift
- Occasionally ascend/descend a stepstool, stepladder, and/or ladder
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers for duration of shift
- Communicate with others to exchange information
- Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
