The Superintendent - Asphalt Paving is responsible for the overall field operations with safety being priority. This includes the scheduling and supervision of field personnel, directing crews, controlling costs and production metrics. The Superintendent is also responsible for maintaining equipment and ensuring compliance with environmental and other business partners that require permits. A working knowledge of state, local and private regulations and requirements that include VDOT highway paving regulations.

Responsiblilities
- Calculates the number of trucks required to haul asphalt from the hot plant according to vehicle capacity, traffic conditions, distance from work site, and productivity of drivers.
- Visits job sites regularly to ascertain progress in meeting time schedules, to ensure appropriate utilization of employees and equipment, ensure slope and material thickness to verify compliance with contracts, and to supervise the overall performance of the job.
- Supervises and coordinates crew activities, studies production schedules, and estimates work requirements for completion of job assignment in compliance with or improving the job estimate.
- Maintains time and materials records necessary to complete daily job costing, prepares progress reports material used, costs and adjusts work schedule accordingly.
- Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality, and crew performance.
- Maintains company policies and procedures.
- Provides direct supervision to employees on multiple crews.
- Provides appropriate training to assigned crew members
- Ensures the safety of crew members and the general public by organizing, setting up, and maintaining all traffic control aid
- Read and understand plans and specifications for various projects
- Must be able to physically climb, lift, and/or carry 25 to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to sit/drive approximately 60% of a 10-to-12-hour shift
- Must be able to stand or walk approximately 40% of a 10-to-12-hour shift.
- Comfort working in extreme temperatures (heat and cold), humidity, and dusty environments.
- High School diploma/GED
- Minimum 3 years’ experience operating heavy equipment
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record with reliable transportation to report to the job site timely
- Must have proven job site skills and on the job training and/or education in engineering to possess the proper attributes of a skilled worker and team leader of crews and projects.
