About the Company
Gulf Guaranty Life Insurance Company (GGLIC) is a Mississippi-domiciled life insurer writing Credit Life & Disability, Industrial/Ordinary Life, and Annuity products throughout the United States under the American Gulf brand.
Role Overview
The Accounting & HR Manager works closely with the Chief Accounting Officer and Chief Financial Officer to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the company's financial records and to administer payroll and employee benefits. Operating within a small finance team, this role is the primary preparer of journals, ledgers, and reconciliations across substantially all accounting cycles, and is a cornerstone of GGLIC's regulatory compliance, statutory reporting, and financial governance.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts (currently Microsoft Dynamics GP / Great Plains) to reflect all insurance transactions — premiums, claims, policyholder accounts, reserves, and investment income.
• Record and post journal entries for month-, quarter-, and year-end close, including accruals, reserves, and reinsurance adjustments, and perform the monthly GL close.
• Prepare monthly bank, investment, intercompany, and claims/loss-reserve reconciliations; investigate discrepancies and record adjusting entries for review and approval.
• Manage cash and disbursements: initiate routine payments and electronic transfers for approval, process invoices through third-party pay systems, and prepare daily cash reports.
• Handle accounts payable and purchasing (Ramp): review vendor invoices, maintain vendor data, reconcile AP and accrued liabilities, and post corporate credit-card activity.
• Run semi-monthly payroll through Netchex, record payroll entries, maintain employee records, and support HR administration and benefits.
• Prepare and analyze financial statements and support statutory and regulatory reporting alongside the CAO and external service providers.
• Support tax compliance and ensure timely remittance of premium taxes and fees.
• Support audits and regulatory examinations with documentation, reconciliations, and explanations.
• Perform and evidence internal-control activities — segregation of duties, documentation retention, and coordination with external actuarial, tax, investment, and payroll providers.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or progress toward certification preferred.
• Experience: 3–5 years of accounting experience, preferably in insurance or another regulated industry; full-cycle general ledger and close experience required.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with GL/ERP software (Great Plains or comparable), strong Excel skills, and familiarity with payroll, AP, and investment-reporting platforms (e.g., Netchex, Ramp, Clearwater).
• Compliance Knowledge: Working understanding of GAAP and statutory accounting principles (SAP), insurance concepts (reserves, reinsurance, premiums), and internal-control frameworks.
• Analytical & Detail-Oriented: Strong attention to detail, sound judgment in investigating discrepancies, and the ability to manage multiple cycles in a small-team, fast-paced environment.
• Communication & Integrity: Excellent written and verbal communication for cross-functional collaboration, plus a high standard of confidentiality and ethical conduct.
Key Working Relationships
This role partners closely with the Treasurer/CFO and Chief Accounting Officer (review and approval of entries, reconciliations, and disbursements), the President/Secretary (transaction approvals and cash reporting), and product-line managers (claims and reserve inputs). It also coordinates with external providers, including the actuarial, tax/advisory, investment, and payroll firms that support the company.
