Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, Action Youth Media (AYM) is a nonprofit seeking new members for our Board of Directors.
At Action Youth Media, we are redefining who leads the future economy. Founded in 2005, AYM is a workforce development and media arts studio dedicated to building communities of mutual respect and economic opportunity. We provide free, inclusive media arts programming designed for students who have faced systemic barriers to digital and technological equity. Our studio isn’t just a classroom; it’s a launchpad where young storytellers transform into youth leaders realizing their inner and collective power to drive community change.
Board members are driven by the need to prepare students, especially those who have historically been left behind, for careers in the future economy by providing access to high-quality media training, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.

Role Description
Our board is composed of leaders from across Montgomery County and the greater DC region. We see our role as helping to build relationships with, and for, families who need the most support - to improve the quality and depth of our media programs, increase the number of programs, and provide the wraparound support that local youth need to succeed. The AYM Board supports the success of AYM’s Executive Director and staff. Our board members provide valuable perspectives, expertise, and experience to help the organization best welcome and serve youth in under-represented families.
Responsibilities
The AYM Board meets every other month on the second or third Saturday at 10 am. Meetings in April, August, and December are in-person. All other meetings are virtual. In addition to attending board meetings, each board member is required to serve on a committee, as well as host or participates in various organizational events to move our Strategic Plan forward. The Board Member will play a key leadership role in advancing Action Youth Media’s mission and strategy.
Qualifications
- Strategic planning, decision-making, and leadership skills to effectively guide the organization.
- Strong fundraising, networking, and partnership-building capabilities to foster financial sustainability and community engagement.
- Interest in, and/or experience with, governance oversight and policy development to ensure accountability and adherence to organizational objectives.
- Passion for youth development and experience in non-profit or education sectors is highly desirable.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in media arts, creative industries, or workforce development is an added advantage.
