Job Description

Veteran Peer Advocate

Action Toward Independence is interested in hiring a Veteran Peer Advocate, to work in the Joseph P. Dwyer Vet 2 Vet Program.

Responsibilities of a Veteran Peer Advocate, supervised by ATI’s Program Manager, would include:

  • Conducting community outreach to Veterans and Service Members with disabilities to promote participation in the Veteran Service Dog Program and as well as offering eligible program participants all services provided by ATI and fellow staff members
  • Outreach to others agencies to promote referrals of people whom may be appropriate for the Vet 2 Vet and/or Veteran Service Dog Program
  • Provide continuous care by collaborating and coordinating with other agencies to supply a coordinated array of services chosen by each participating Veteran and/or Service Member to achieve their goals for independent living
  • Able to facilitate the completion of program objectives with a Dog Trainer and Service Dog Teams
  • Provide Veterans and Service Members with a set of independent living core services aimed at promoting independence, self help, community inclusion/equal access, personal growth, empowerment and achievement of personal goals through use of a peer based model and service dog program
  • Provide peer support, mentoring, assistance and advocacy to Veterans and Service Members on an individual and group basis to enable them to successfully re-integrate to civilian and family life
  • To access community resources and to develop support systems and skills to cope with daily stresses
  • Provide information and referral to other community based services and supports that will help the veteran with identified needs and goals
  • Assist the Veteran and Service Member to obtain benefits, housing, employment, social connections and other needs as requested by the individual
  • Maintain their own personal wellness and present an appropriate model to those whom are mentored

Qualifications necessary would be:

  • Honorable Discharge from any Branch of Service
  • Associates Degree and a minimum of 2 years equivalent experience or appropriate combination of skills, experience and education.
  • Demonstrating commitment to disability rights and an independent living philosophy.
  • Must have knowledge of the Mental Health Field and PTSD
  • Must be self-directing and able to work independently
  • Personal experience with disability is a plus
  • Needs to possess excellent written, verbal and organizational skills
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Willingness to participate in continuing education where applicable to the job duties, performance and/or professional growth
