Job Title: Traveling Construction Superintendent – Commercial Ground-Up Projects
Job Description
This role leads commercial ground-up construction projects in the field, overseeing multiple trades, coordinating closely with the office project management team, and ensuring that work is completed safely, on schedule, and to high quality standards. The superintendent serves as the primary on-site representative, managing day-to-day operations, inspections, and documentation for projects such as restaurant and hospitality builds.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the jobsite as the primary on-site representative, overseeing foremen from each trade and coordinating daily field activities.
- Supervise and direct crews ranging in size from approximately 4 to 50 people at a time, ensuring efficient and safe execution of work.
- Work and communicate daily with the project manager based in the Naperville office to align field operations with project goals, schedules, and budgets.
- Plan and manage project scheduling, including sequencing of trades, coordination of subcontractors, and adjustments to maintain project timelines.
- Conduct and support regular inspections, ensuring the project meets applicable codes, standards, and client expectations.
- Maintain strict quality control and quality assurance on all aspects of the build, promptly addressing deficiencies or issues in the field.
- Complete detailed daily and weekly logs and reports through the company’s online portal to document progress, issues, and site conditions.
- Utilize PlanGrid and Microsoft Excel to review drawings, track project data, and maintain accurate documentation.
- Use an iPad, laptop, and phone to manage communication, documentation, and project management tools on site.
- Oversee commercial and restaurant ground-up construction activities, including site work, structural work, and interior buildout.
- Collaborate with trade foremen to resolve field issues, coordinate work areas, and support a productive and safe jobsite.
- Ensure adherence to safety practices and OSHA standards on site, promoting a safety-first culture.
- Participate in or support client, inspector, and stakeholder site visits as needed, representing the project professionally.
- Support a collaborative culture on site, fostering teamwork among trades and maintaining a positive, solution-focused environment.
Essential Skills
- 5 years of ground-up and site work construction experience, ideally all or mostly in commercial projects.
- Proven experience overseeing multiple trades and leading crews on active construction sites.
- Ability to manage commercial ground-up projects, including restaurant or hospitality builds.
- Hands-on experience with scheduling and coordinating field activities and inspections.
- Proficiency with PlanGrid or a similar construction management platform.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Excel, for reporting and documentation.
- Ability to use an iPad, laptop, and phone effectively for on-site project management and communication.
- Strong communication skills to work daily with an office-based project manager and field teams.
- Demonstrated focus on quality control and quality assurance in the field.
- Current OSHA 10 certification.
- Trade experience in a construction discipline (such as carpentry, electrical, mechanical, or similar) is preferred.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Restaurant or hospitality construction experience is a major plus.
- Experience with Procore is a plus, as the platform used is similar to Procore.
- OSHA 30 certification is a bonus but not required.
- Experience working in a family-oriented, collaborative construction environment is beneficial.
- Ability to work autonomously without micromanagement while remaining highly accountable.
- Strong reputation for professionalism, reliability, and constructive communication about past roles and projects.
- Comfort overseeing commercial ground-up builds from site work through completion.
Work Environment
This is a field-based superintendent role on commercial ground-up construction sites, with a strong focus on restaurant and hospitality projects. The superintendent oversees the foremen for each trade on the jobsite and is typically the only full-time representative from the company on site, aside from periodic visits from other team members. Work is performed on active construction sites, including site work, structural construction, and interior buildout. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oakbrook Terrace, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $48.08 - $52.88/hr.
