You will work directly on machines such as articulated trucks, tractor scrapers, large mining trucks, off-highway trucks, and select oil and gas products. The position involves executing and supporting on-machine tests, analyzing performance data, and collaborating with engineering teams to validate system performance and drive continuous improvements.
Responsibilities
- Perform transmission and drivetrain testing on mining and resource industry equipment, including articulated trucks, tractor scrapers, large mining trucks, and off-highway trucks.
- Operate machines to execute detailed test plans and collect high-quality performance data in both lab and field environments.
- Supervise testing activities to ensure proper test execution, adherence to procedures, and safe operation of equipment.
- Analyze test results and compare performance data against engineering expectations and performance targets.
- Work closely with component and controls engineers to identify performance gaps and recommend design or calibration changes.
- Support updates and adjustments to transmission control software based on test findings and analysis.
- Document test procedures, configurations, results, and engineering conclusions in a clear and structured manner.
- Prepare and deliver presentations that summarize test results, conclusions, and recommendations for cross-functional engineering teams.
- Troubleshoot issues identified during testing, diagnose root causes, and help drive timely resolution.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of test plans, validation protocols, and test equipment setups.
- Use data analysis tools and test engineering methodologies to validate drivetrain, transmission, and powertrain performance.
- Work in an on-machine environment, including outdoor and field-based testing conditions, and adapt to varying test setups and site requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent relevant experience for non-degreed candidates with strong hands-on testing and data experience.
- Hands-on mechanical aptitude, preferably with engines, vehicles, or heavy equipment.
- Experience performing testing activities, including collecting, reviewing, and analyzing test data.
- Ability to work safely and effectively on-machine and in outdoor environments, including field-based testing conditions.
- Strong communication skills for clearly documenting test procedures, results, and engineering conclusions.
- Ability to present findings and recommendations to engineering and cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated capability to troubleshoot mechanical and system issues during testing and support repairs or adjustments.
- Experience with validation, test engineering practices, and executing test plans on mechanical or drivetrain systems.
- Experience with drivetrain, transmission, or powertrain systems in heavy equipment, automotive, or related machinery.
- Background working with heavy equipment, automotive systems, diesel-powered vehicles, or industrial machinery.
- Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel and PowerPoint for processing and presenting test results.
- Basic understanding of CAD tools to review designs and support test setup or component evaluation.
- Understanding of machine controls, including how systems are controlled and integrated within vehicles or equipment.
- Experience with validation protocols, test plans, and test equipment setup and operation.
- Exposure to LabVIEW or similar tools for data acquisition or test automation.
- Experience using Python or similar scripting languages for data analysis or test automation is a plus.
- Ability to support troubleshooting and repair activities on drivetrain, transmission, and vehicle systems.
- On-machine experience operating or working closely with large mobile equipment in test or development environments.
This role is primarily based in an on-machine, hands-on test environment that includes both controlled test facilities and outdoor, field-based testing locations. You will regularly work around large mining and off-highway equipment, operating machines to execute test plans and collect data. The work involves exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and typical heavy-equipment test site conditions. You will use a range of test equipment, data acquisition tools, and software such as Excel, PowerPoint, LabVIEW, and potentially Python for data analysis and reporting. Collaboration with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams is frequent, and the environment emphasizes safety, clear communication, and careful documentation while working directly with complex mechanical and drivetrain systems.
