Job Description
This role offers an opportunity for a motivated Survey Field Technician II (Instrument Person) to support a field survey crew and grow their career with a highly respected engineering and surveying organization. You will work closely with a Crew Chief to perform a wide range of field surveying tasks, ensuring accurate data collection, safe operations, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Responsibilities
- Assist the Crew Chief in the daily operation of a field survey crew, providing reliable support to ensure efficient project execution.
- Operate survey instruments and equipment, including GPS, total stations, and related tools, to accurately collect field data and locate existing features.
- Collect, record, and verify topographic and land survey data with a high level of accuracy, thoroughness, and attention to detail.
- Ensure all work meets applicable regulatory requirements, project specifications, and internal quality standards.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following established safety procedures, using equipment properly, and identifying potential hazards in the field.
- Protect, clean, and maintain survey equipment and vehicles to ensure they remain in good working condition and are ready for daily use.
- Support survey tasks for a variety of projects, including land development, ALTA surveys, and engineering-related survey analysis.
- Communicate effectively with the Crew Chief and team members to coordinate field activities and resolve problems as they arise.
- Represent the survey team professionally in the field, maintaining positive public relations when interacting with property owners, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Travel to project sites as needed, including occasional overnight stays, to support field survey operations.
- Walk extensively outdoors year-round over diverse terrain and in extreme weather conditions, including heat and cold, to access and survey project sites.
- 1 to 2 years of surveying experience in field operations.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience working as part of a survey crew, supporting land surveying and topographic survey activities.
- Ability to operate survey instruments such as GPS and total stations, including Trimble equipment.
- Strong attention to detail with a precise and methodical approach to data collection and documentation.
- Process-oriented mindset with steady, consistent, and structured work habits.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently when required.
- Comfort working outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, and traversing various types of terrain.
- Valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Ability to successfully complete a background check.
- Ability to successfully complete a drug test.
- EFB (electronic field book) data collection experience preferred.
- Experience with Civil 3D or similar design and drafting software for survey-related work is beneficial.
- Familiarity with land development projects and engineering-focused surveying is an advantage.
- Exposure to ALTA surveys, survey analysis, and related documentation is helpful.
- Interest in working within a multidisciplinary environment that includes civil, environmental, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering.

This is an onsite role with a schedule structured as four nine-hour days and a half day on Fridays, providing a balanced workweek. You will spend a significant portion of your time outdoors on active project sites, working year-round in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, and walking over uneven or challenging terrain. The position involves regular use of survey instruments and technologies such as GPS, total stations, Trimble equipment, and electronic field data collection tools, as well as interaction with engineering and land development teams. Some overnight travel may be required to support projects in different locations. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newark, DE.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $33.00/hr.
