Job Title: Area Superintendent – Mission Critical / Data Center Construction
Job Description

The Area Superintendent oversees a defined portion of a large, complex commercial construction project, often in a mission critical or data center environment. This role combines hands-on building with detailed planning, ensuring that field activities in the assigned area are safe, well-coordinated, on schedule, and delivered to a high standard of quality. You will lead crews and trade partners, manage day-to-day field execution, and drive production while collaborating closely with field and project engineers. This position offers the opportunity to own a major area of work with significant visibility, contribute to technically sophisticated projects, and grow as a field leader in a high-performance culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day field execution for an assigned area of a large, complex commercial construction project, often a mission critical or data center build.
  • Plan the work in detail, clearly communicate the plan to crews and trade partners, and execute the plan to meet safety, schedule, quality, and production goals.
  • Own safety performance in your area by promoting a safety-first mindset, enforcing safety standards, and modeling safe behaviors at all times.
  • Coordinate and supervise subcontractors and trade partners to ensure work is properly sequenced, staffed, and aligned with project priorities.
  • Manage and track the construction schedule for your area, using Critical Path Method (CPM) principles to monitor progress, identify risks, and drive recovery plans when needed.
  • Utilize scheduling tools such as Primavera P6 (or equivalent) to build, update, and maintain activity sequences, logic ties, and critical path analyses.
  • Oversee quality control for your area, including review of shop drawings and blueprints, verification of field installation, and prompt resolution of issues.
  • Collaborate with field and project engineers to support layout, coordination, and technical problem-solving in the field.
  • Use digital workflows and construction technology tools, including PDF markup software, spreadsheets, and common construction platforms, to manage information and communicate effectively.
  • Create, review, and implement task-level safety plans such as Activity Hazard Analyses (AHA), Safety Task Analyses (STA), Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), or equivalent.
  • Maintain strong communication with project leadership, trade partners, and clients, providing clear updates on safety, schedule, and production in your area.
  • Mentor and coach newer team members, fostering their development as field leaders and reinforcing a high-performance, collaborative site culture.
  • Respond professionally to client and stakeholder requests, including challenging or unexpected issues, while protecting project priorities.
  • Support and uphold structured site processes and high standards for coordination, documentation, and execution.
  • Quickly assume ownership of your assigned area after onboarding, driving continuous improvement in safety, productivity, and quality.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil or Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related field.
  • 5–6 years of experience on large commercial construction projects; mission critical or data center project experience is a strong plus.
  • Proven field leadership experience overseeing crews and subcontractors on complex commercial projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan work, communicate plans clearly, and drive execution in a fast-paced field environment.
  • Strong understanding of construction management principles, including scheduling, safety, quality, and production tracking.
  • Experience managing commercial construction schedules using Critical Path Method (CPM) concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with project scheduling tools such as Primavera P6 or an equivalent platform.
  • Ability to build and maintain schedules in software, including adding and deleting activities, creating and adjusting logic ties, analyzing critical path, and developing recovery plans.
  • Strong blueprint and shop drawing reading skills, with familiarity in layout and field verification.
  • Comfort with digital workflows and cloud-based construction tools.
  • Proficiency with PDF markup tools such as Bluebeam (or similar), and with MS Office applications, especially Excel.
  • Experience creating or reviewing task-level safety documents such as AHA, STA, JHA, or equivalent.
  • Safety-first mindset on large-scale commercial work and the ability to lead by example in complex environments involving structure, heavy lifts, and high-activity zones.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with field teams, project engineers, trade partners, and clients.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Self-starter who can integrate quickly into a structured, high-performance site culture.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Mission critical or data center construction experience, particularly on large-scale projects approaching or exceeding $1B in value.
  • Experience working on technically complex, high-profile commercial projects with rigorous processes and standards.
  • Demonstrated strength as a field planner rather than a pure scheduler, with the ability to translate schedules into effective field execution.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, highly coordinated environment with multiple stakeholders and trade partners.
  • Enjoys coaching and mentoring newer team members and contributing to the development of the next generation of field leaders.
  • Adaptable, professional demeanor when interacting with clients and project stakeholders, including in challenging or rapidly changing situations.
  • OSHA 10 certification (preferred).
  • CPR/First Aid certification (preferred).
  • Interest in long-term career growth in field leadership roles within large, complex construction programs.
  • Willingness to relocate to Montgomery, AL for project needs; relocation assistance is available.
  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours and additional days during peak phases, as required by project demands.
Work Environment

This role is 100% on-site at a single designated project location and is not hybrid or remote. You will work in a fast-paced, structured construction environment with strong expectations for coordination, communication, and adherence to established processes. Typical workdays start early, often around 6:00 a.m., and a 5–6 day work week is common; during peak phases, schedules may expand to 6–7 days per week depending on project demands. The work centers on large-scale, mission critical data center projects, each with a project value around $1B, requiring close coordination with multiple trades, heavy equipment operations, and high-activity work zones. The team uses modern construction technologies and tools, including digital workflows, cloud-based platforms, PDF markup software such as Bluebeam, and MS Office applications. Many team members relocate from other markets to support these projects, and structured but rapid onboarding helps new hires assume ownership of their areas quickly. Relocation to Montgomery, AL is expected for this opportunity, and moving expenses will be reimbursed. The environment emphasizes safety, professionalism, and long-term career development, with strong processes, high standards, and a culture that invests in field leadership growth. Attire is typical for a commercial construction site, including appropriate workwear and required personal protective equipment.
