What are the responsibilities and job description for the Site Manager position at Actalent?
Job Description
The Site Manager oversees complex installation projects, including work on towers, underground environments, and large civil initiatives such as tunnel projects. This role manages end-to-end site activities, from surveys and zoning coordination to on-site execution and project sequencing. The Site Manager spends a significant amount of time at project locations, especially during the initial phases, to ensure safe, timely, and high-quality delivery.
Responsibilities
- Oversee installation projects across multiple sites, including towers, underground and below-ground environments, and large civil construction initiatives.
- Conduct detailed site surveys in existing buildings and new construction sites to assess conditions, constraints, and installation requirements.
- Plan and lead project sequencing, proactively determining what tasks must occur first and how activities impact one another.
- Coordinate and manage subcontractors and on-site teams, ensuring work meets project specifications, safety standards, and timelines.
- Handle zoning-related calls and communications, managing the process from initial inquiry through to final approvals.
- Monitor and manage civil construction and site development activities, including work related to fiber optic cable installation and associated infrastructure.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and maintain clear communication throughout the project lifecycle.
- Apply agile project management principles where appropriate to prioritize work, adapt to changing conditions, and maintain project momentum.
- Ensure quality control on all installations, including fiber optic, land mobile radio, and related systems, where applicable.
- Travel regularly to project sites nationally, and potentially internationally, to provide on-site leadership and oversight.
- For junior-level team members, provide guidance, coaching, and clear instructions to support their development and ensure safe, accurate work.
- Maintain accurate documentation of site conditions, project progress, and any changes to scope or sequencing.
- Proven experience in civil construction and site development, including work in underground or below-ground environments.
- Hands-on experience with construction or technical installations, such as cable or fiber optic cable installation.
- Ability to conduct thorough site surveys in existing buildings and new construction sites.
- Strong understanding of project sequencing, including the ability to proactively determine priorities and anticipate cause-and-effect relationships.
- Experience handling zoning calls and managing the zoning process from initial contact through to completion.
- Capability to work on or around towers and similar structures in a construction or installation context.
- Ability to interact effectively with clients and subcontractors, building strong working relationships on-site.
- Demonstrated initiative, with the ability to lead activities independently and make sound decisions in the field.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and consistently, particularly for junior or less-experienced candidates.
- Mechanical inclination and the physical capability to work safely in construction and tower environments.
- Willingness and ability to travel nationally and potentially overseas on a regular basis.
- Agile project management experience or familiarity with agile methodologies.
- Heavy civil construction background; tower-building experience is a plus.
- Land mobile radio and microwave experience.
- Radio RF background or experience (preferred but not required).
- Experience with tunnel work (below-ground work) or bi-directional amplifier systems.
- Fiber laying and fiber optic installation experience.
- Construction management education or background.
- Strong aptitude for learning new technologies and methods, especially for junior-level candidates.
- Teachability and openness to coaching, particularly for less-experienced team members.
The role is primarily field-based, with frequent travel from project site to project site across different regions and, at times, internationally. Work takes place in a variety of environments, including active construction sites, existing buildings, towers, tunnels, and other below-ground locations. The position involves regular on-site presence, especially during the early stages of projects, and requires comfort working around heavy civil construction activities, technical installations, and communications infrastructure such as fiber optic and land mobile radio systems. The work environment is fast-paced and project-driven, offering opportunities for growth and exposure to complex, large-scale infrastructure projects.
