Job Title: Science Writer

Job Description

The Science Writer develops and produces clear, engaging, and accurate content that showcases leading-edge biomedical and clinical research. This role focuses primarily on media releases with additional marketing copy, and supports strategic marketing and communications goals by working closely with colleagues across marketing, earned media, and social media. The Science Writer creates content tailored to diverse audiences, including biomedical professionals, researchers, clinicians, patient families, and the general public, while ensuring every piece aligns with institutional brand standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and produce a wide range of marketing and communications content, including written articles, emails, media releases, social media content, and other materials focused on research activities, with an approximate 70/30 split between media releases and marketing copy.
  • Collaborate with marketing, earned media, social media, and other communications colleagues to plan, coordinate, and create content that supports strategic marketing and communications objectives.
  • Create scientifically accurate yet accessible content for multiple audiences, such as biomedical professionals, researchers, clinicians, patient families, and the general public.
  • Ensure all written materials consistently reflect and uphold institutional brand standards, voice, and style guidelines.
  • Conduct interviews with investigators and other subject matter experts to understand their research, upcoming publications, and key findings, and translate these into compelling written stories.
  • Translate complex medical and scientific concepts into clear, engaging language suitable for lay audiences while maintaining scientific accuracy.
  • Work efficiently and independently, producing high-quality drafts that require minimal editing and can move quickly through review and approval processes.
  • Collaborate with research and science communications leaders to identify story opportunities and align content with broader institutional priorities.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 3–5 years of related experience in marketing, communications, journalism, or a closely related field.
  • Proven science writing experience, with a strong portfolio demonstrating the ability to communicate complex scientific and medical topics.
  • Demonstrated experience translating medical and scientific information into clear, engaging content for lay audiences.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including the ability to structure content logically, maintain accuracy, and adapt tone for different audiences.
  • Experience in marketing management or supporting marketing initiatives through written content.
  • Comfort and experience interfacing directly with researchers, clinicians, and other subject matter experts.
  • Ability to work nimbly and independently, producing high-quality content with minimal need for edits.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience or familiarity with medical writing, biomedical topics, and clinical research environments.
  • Editing skills, including reviewing and refining content for clarity, consistency, and adherence to brand standards.
  • Experience with document control or working within structured review and approval processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in biomedical or clinical research communication is highly beneficial.
  • Experience writing for multiple channels such as media releases, email campaigns, websites, and social media.
  • Ability to tailor messaging for diverse audiences, from scientific peers to patient families and the general public.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively within cross-functional marketing and communications teams.
  • Attention to detail in maintaining brand voice, terminology, and style across all written materials.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Boston, MA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
