Job Title: Roadway Special Inspector

Job Description

A growing engineering and testing organization is seeking a Roadway Special Inspector to support a rapidly expanding portfolio of UDOT roadway projects across Southern and Northern Utah, including Cedar City, St. George, and surrounding areas. This role combines hands-on field inspection with close coordination with engineers and leadership to ensure that roadway, bridge, utility, and related infrastructure projects are delivered safely, accurately, and in full compliance with plans and specifications. The position offers flexibility in where you live, meaningful long-term project opportunities, and the chance to work with a tight‑knit, field‑driven inspection team that values work–life balance and professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Perform UDOT roadway and construction inspections within current certification and experience areas.
  • Inspect a variety of work including roadway construction, bridge elements, utilities such as fiber optic conduit, and related civil infrastructure.
  • Conduct visual inspections of construction activities to verify conformance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Complete daily inspection, testing, and quantity documentation using an iPad or tablet‑based reporting system.
  • Track and validate quantities, proactively review construction plans, and identify potential issues before they affect schedule, cost, or quality.
  • Perform ACI concrete testing, including sampling and field testing, as required by project scope.
  • Perform soil compaction testing and other field material tests in accordance with project and UDOT requirements.
  • Maintain all required certifications and actively work toward obtaining and upgrading ACI, ICC, and UDOT certifications as needed.
  • Support and coordinate with field engineers, resident engineers, and other inspectors, including working onsite together typically 1–2 days per week.
  • Communicate professionally with contractors and clients, providing clear, objective feedback on compliance and quality issues.
  • Maintain a company vehicle while on assignment, including completing required vehicle inspections and reporting.
  • Assist with technician training, mentoring, and field documentation to support team development and consistency in inspection practices.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, and promote a strong safety culture on every project site.
  • Work project‑dependent schedules, including potential extended hours, to meet construction and inspection demands.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on project needs and organizational priorities.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications for roadway, bridge, and utility projects.
  • Ability to track and calculate construction quantities, including square yardage and tonnage, and document work in real time.
  • Proficiency using an iPad or tablet‑based system for inspection reporting, testing records, and daily documentation.
  • Experience performing UDOT construction inspections or private roadway construction inspections.
  • Ability to work confidently and independently in the field, including serving as the sole inspector on a project when required.
  • Strong common sense, professionalism, and sound judgment in interactions with contractors, engineers, and clients.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to pass a pre‑employment drug screen.
  • Willingness to work project‑dependent schedules, including potential overtime of approximately 50–55 hours per week on many roadway projects.
  • Hands‑on experience with construction inspection activities such as concrete placement, asphalt paving, and earthwork.
  • Ability to perform field material testing for concrete and soil compaction in accordance with relevant standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • ICC Reinforced Concrete certification and/or Structural Masonry certification.
  • ACI Level II certification or other advanced ACI certifications.
  • ACI certifications related to concrete testing and inspection.
  • UDOT certifications (Level I – IV) or the ability to obtain them within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Experience with material testing for roadway and bridge construction projects.
  • Familiarity with UDOT standards, specifications, and inspection procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with field engineers and resident engineers.
  • Dependable, self‑motivated, and comfortable working independently in the field while maintaining close coordination with the broader project team.

Work Environment

This is a field‑based role with work performed onsite at roadway, bridge, and utility construction projects across greater Utah, with a focus on Southern Utah including areas such as Cedar City and St. George. Candidates may live anywhere within a reasonable driving distance, generally up to approximately four hours from Utah project sites. Many projects require staying near the job site during the work week, with typical patterns involving travel on Sunday night, working onsite through the week, and returning home at the end of the work week. A company vehicle is provided while on assignment, and per diem and lodging arrangements are available when applicable. The work environment is primarily outdoors on active construction sites, requiring regular travel, exposure to varying weather conditions, and close interaction with contractors and engineers. The organization emphasizes a healthy work–life balance and strives to align workload so most team members can complete their work in approximately 40 hours per week, while recognizing that some roadway projects may require 50–55 hours during peak periods. The culture is collaborative and field‑driven, with a tight‑knit inspection team and leadership that supports professional development. The role involves regular use of tablets and other field testing equipment for documentation and material testing. The total rewards package includes four weeks of combined sick time and PTO (with a portion front‑loaded and the remainder accrued weekly), the opportunity to select any nine holidays per year, and a comprehensive benefits program that includes multiple medical plan options, a health savings account, hospital cost protection, critical illness and accident protection, health advocacy services, an employee assistance program, dental and vision coverage, life and AD&D insurance, short‑term and long‑term disability, transportation benefits, a 401(k) plan, and access to various affinity and discount programs.
