Description:
- Be the Responsible Engineering Authority for the TT&C radio subsystem: plan the activities, report problems and progress, monitor development and build costs, and find solutions to problems as they arise.
- Review telemetry, tracking and control system, in the context of the proposed mission, and proposed satellite bus design, to develop an accurate, complete set of requirements. Design, build and test the radio system. Use commercially available subassemblies, such as antennas, splitters and radio modules, to be integrated with the spacecraft. Lead purchasing decisions based on cost, availability etc.
- Determine the technical performance requirements for ground stations to meet the overall link performance requirements and operational requirements. Select ground stations and integrate into a complete, end-to-end communication network.
- Specify the hardware interfaces and API to facilitate software control of the communications subsystem. Specify the various modes of operation and the software command and control required for successful operation of the communications system via the on-board main controller.
- Work with the other members of the satellite bus team, to ensure mechanical fit, stress and vibration performance, environmental performance, radiation hardness, electrical requirements, EMC, safety and environmental compliance.
- Determine test strategies appropriate to module-, sub-system-, spacecraft- and full system-level design verification. Manage the design, equipment procurement and assembly of test facilities as required. Perform the required tests and report the results.
- Manage/support the process of obtaining system test permits and licenses for ground- and space-based testing, as well as any type approvals needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, CS or substantial (minimum 5 years) work in design or integration of radio systems.
- Familiar with radio propagation calculations, understanding of antenna types, antenna gain, SNR and typical modem performance figures as well as related topics
- Demonstrated ability to design and integrate radio systems
- Demonstrated ability to manage the broader aspects of a project (gathering requirements, directing technicians, assessing vendors, working in a multi-disciplinary team)
- Ability to work closely and communicate effectively with others (verbally and in writing)
- Experience with Satellite Systems, TT&C, Teleports, TCP/IP Communications, LAN, and WAN
- Knowledge of orbital mechanics
- Mathematical modeling capabilities (Python and Numpy)
