Job Title: Supplier Quality Technician
Job Description
The Supplier Quality Technician inspects incoming materials and components, identifies and contains nonconforming product, and supports supplier quality activities to ensure all supplied parts meet required standards. This role works closely with engineering, production, and suppliers to maintain robust inspection plans, accurate documentation, and consistent supplier performance.
Responsibilities
- Perform receiving inspection on incoming materials and components to verify conformance to specifications and standards.
- Identify, segregate, and disposition nonconforming materials received from suppliers to prevent defective product from entering production.
- Monitor, maintain, and update inspection plans in the ERP system based on engineering changes or supplier performance trends.
- Review part specifications and drawings to define, create, and set up appropriate inspection plans and criteria.
- Retain and archive supplier material certificates, certificates of conformance, and inspection data in accordance with documented procedures.
- Gather, review, and retain supplier PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) deliverables to support qualification and ongoing approval of supplied parts.
- Help determine supplier-at-fault issues identified in production by participating in investigations and root cause analysis.
- Communicate directly with suppliers regarding nonconformance investigations, returns, and corrective actions.
- Collect and compile supplier performance data for ongoing monitoring and reporting of quality metrics.
- Use inspection management systems and ERP tools to document inspection results and maintain accurate quality records.
- Handle materials during inspection safely and efficiently, ensuring proper identification, traceability, and storage.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support continuous improvement in supplier quality and inspection processes.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1–2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in blueprint reading to interpret part drawings and specifications.
- Experience using measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
- Intermediate-level knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Familiarity with PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) procedures and documentation.
- Experience working in an inspection or manufacturing environment with exposure to supplier quality or quality assurance activities.
- Ability to use an inspection management system to record and manage inspection data.
- Experience working with an ERP system to manage inspection plans and material status.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and Excel for communication, data entry, and reporting.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when inspecting components and reviewing documentation.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and external suppliers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Hands-on expertise or strong interest in developing deeper skills in inspection techniques, GD&T application, and supplier quality systems.
- Experience with materials handling in a manufacturing or quality inspection setting.
- Ability to interpret and manage supplier material certificates and certificates of conformance.
- Capability to support data-driven decision-making through collection and analysis of supplier performance metrics.
- Motivation to grow into roles with greater responsibility, such as Supplier Quality Engineer, as skills and experience develop.
Work Environment
The role operates primarily in a manufacturing and quality inspection environment that requires continuous sitting, seeing, hearing, speaking, reading, computer use, and information comprehension. The position frequently involves problem solving, reasoning, and processing complex technical information, along with fine motor skills for manipulating measurement tools and equipment. The technician regularly walks and stands to perform inspections and moves between workstations as needed. Decision making occurs on an occasional basis, particularly when assessing nonconforming materials or escalating issues. The role involves intermittent lifting of up to 30 pounds, especially when handling components and materials for inspection. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $31.00/hr.
