What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Engineer position at Actalent?
Job Title: Project Engineer
Job Description
The Project Engineer supports the Inside Sales and Engineering teams by managing and enhancing the backend configuration logic of a sales tool used to specify highly customizable firetrucks. This role focuses on maintaining and extending rule-based configuration logic, validating product feasibility in Solidworks, and ensuring compatibility between mechanical and electrical components. Working from a prioritized request queue, the Project Engineer handles tasks ranging from simple corrections to the implementation of complex new options and model integrations.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the configuration logic on the backend of the firetruck builder sales tool, with a focus on rule-based and if/then logic.
- Support the integration of new firetruck models into the configurator, including cab and chassis options and related configurations.
- Perform feasibility studies using CAD tools (Solidworks preferred) to confirm that selected options and components can function together as intended.
- Check mechanical and electrical compatibility between parts, using drawings and documentation to determine what components can or cannot be combined.
- Pull, validate, and reference data from a homegrown configuration database to ensure accurate and up-to-date product options.
- Update configuration options and logic based on feasibility findings and compatibility rules.
- Work from a prioritized request queue, completing work items that support both Sales and Engineering teams.
- Address requests ranging from simple configuration fixes to the addition of complex new product options and rules.
- Collaborate closely with a tenured team of project engineers and sales professionals to refine product configurations and resolve issues.
- Document configuration changes, logic updates, and feasibility decisions to support transparency and future maintenance.
Essential Skills
- Experience with programming logic or rule-based logic, including if/then style configuration rules.
- Hands-on experience with product configurators or configuration management tools.
- Mechanical and electrical product understanding, including the ability to read drawings and determine which components can or cannot be used together.
- CAD familiarity, with Solidworks strongly preferred (focus on feasibility and validation rather than detailed design).
- Experience performing feasibility studies for complex, configurable products.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with particular emphasis on Excel for managing and analyzing configuration data.
- Ability to work effectively from a prioritized request queue and manage multiple tasks with varying complexity.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when validating configuration logic and product compatibility.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with Sales, Engineering, and other stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with custom product configuration and product configuration management.
- Background in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Experience with configuration data migration or working with homegrown configuration databases.
- Exposure to integrating new products or models into existing sales or configuration tools.
- Interest in learning from and collaborating with experienced salespeople and engineers on complex, highly customizable products.
Work Environment
This role is based in an office environment with an open or cubicle-style layout. You will work as part of a small, collaborative team of four Project Engineers, plus one additional team member supporting dealer management. Team members bring different strengths and areas of expertise, creating a supportive environment focused on execution and knowledge sharing. The primary tools include a homegrown sales configurator, Solidworks for feasibility checks, and Microsoft Office (especially Excel) for data handling and analysis. The work centers on integrating a new firetruck product line into the sales tool, with the project expected to run through the end of the year and the potential for extension based on project needs.
