Job Description
The Piping Designer supports the successful delivery of power and energy projects by leading piping design activities, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring high-quality construction deliverables. This role manages assigned project segments, oversees the preparation and approval of drawings and related documentation, and collaborates closely with engineering, drafting, and construction personnel to meet project objectives, schedules, and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Implement assignments and activities delegated by the Group Supervisor in alignment with project goals and standards.
- Execute project objectives by working collaboratively with drafters, designers, engineers, and support personnel in the planning, scheduling, quality control, and execution of projects.
- Manage the completion of all required piping design deliverables, including construction drawings, design studies, and bills of materials.
- Schedule work assignments for small to medium-sized projects while providing guidance, training, and assistance to designers, checkers, and drafters.
- Manage a defined segment of a project under the direction of the assigned Group Supervisor, ensuring scope, schedule, and quality requirements are met.
- Coordinate with client representatives and construction personnel to ensure client input and job requirements are accurately captured and implemented in accordance with contractual obligations.
- Assist in the preparation of engineering and construction estimates and other project-related documentation.
- Assist in estimating project design and drafting manpower requirements to support effective resource planning.
- Review and provide final approval of drawings to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and established discipline standards.
- Maintain engineering document indices and drafting progress reports to track and communicate project status.
- Confirm the checking and approval status of all vendor shop drawings and ensure they align with project requirements.
- Demonstrate effective use of various CADD software applications in accordance with project requirements and standards.
- Communicate clearly and professionally in person, by telephone, and via email to support coordination and issue resolution.
- Organize and prioritize work assignments independently, coordinating multiple tasks with strong attention to detail and managing conflicting priorities and deadlines.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned to support project and team success.
- High school diploma or associate degree with adequate drafting coursework.
- Minimum 7–10 years of piping design experience within the power or energy and chemicals industry.
- Strong overall understanding of technical disciplines and project execution processes.
- Strong CAD skills with experience in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Revit, with a willingness to learn additional platforms as required.
- Proficiency with AVEVA E3D (or PDMS) software.
- Experience in chemical, refinery, power, or LNG projects.
- Proficiency in CADWorx and Navisworks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize various CADD software applications according to project requirements.
- Strong supervision skills with the ability to mentor, lead, train, and motivate team members to produce quality work.
- Research, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills.
- Strong questioning and feedback skills to clarify requirements and improve outcomes.
- Project and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.

- Ability to safely lift, carry, and move objects as required by the role.
- Experience with Autodesk or Bentley structural packages.
- Experience with SmartPlant or similar design tools.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced project environment.
- Experience working on brand new power generation plant designs from the ground up.
- Strong attention to detail in reviewing drawings, specifications, and vendor documentation.
- Comfort working in both office and industrial site environments, including exposure to varying noise levels and equipment.
- Motivation to work with a leading organization in the power industry that is rapidly gaining market share and adding new projects.
The role primarily operates in a general office environment within a fast-paced project setting, using computer-aided design software, standard office equipment, and collaboration tools. On occasion, the position requires work in industrial locations such as power plants or related facilities, where noise levels range from moderate to high and may include bells, whistles, and other audible signals. Job sites may contain light to heavy vehicles, small to large equipment, construction materials, communication equipment, and tools, with personnel standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking. The environment emphasizes safety, coordination, and effective communication while supporting the design and execution of complex power generation projects.

This is a Contract position based out of Charlotte, NC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $70.00/hr.
