Job Description
The Phlebotomist plays a key role in providing high-quality laboratory services by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and preparing samples, and supporting accurate and timely diagnostic testing. This role assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement while ensuring a professional, courteous experience for every patient and strict adherence to laboratory procedures and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Label specimen tubes accurately and completely, ensuring all information matches the laboratory requisition forms and physician orders.
- Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes and verify that all test requests are 100% correct.
- Package specimens for transport, following protocols for temperature, container type, and handling requirements.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes according to protocol.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and specimen records in the appropriate systems.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries, following applicable procedures.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control standards.
- Contribute to workflow efficiency by assisting with troubleshooting, training, and recommending process improvements within the phlebotomy and laboratory environment.
- Provide courteous, patient-focused customer service during all interactions.
- Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a lab or hospital environment.
- Proficiency in using straight needles and butterfly needles for specimen collection.
- Ability to collect, label, process, and store specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes.
- Knowledge of specimen handling requirements, including centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport.
- Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and standard safety practices.
- Ability to read and understand physicians’ orders and follow specific testing protocols.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry and documentation tasks.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0–2 years of overall experience in a related medical or laboratory role.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Experience working in a fast-paced clinical, hospital, or laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with laboratory operations, including specimen processing and basic equipment use such as centrifuges.
- Ability to update and maintain accurate patient information in laboratory or clinical systems.
- Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and callers requesting laboratory results.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple specimen collections and processing tasks efficiently.
- Comfort working with various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
This role operates in a clinical or laboratory setting that handles a high volume of patients and specimens. The Phlebotomist works with standard laboratory equipment such as needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for labeling and updating patient information. The environment requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. Work typically involves standing for extended periods, interacting directly with patients, and coordinating with clinical and laboratory staff to ensure timely specimen collection and processing. This is a Contract position based out of Plymouth Meeting, PA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
