Job Description
The Phlebotomist performs high-quality blood draws and specimen collections for patients of all ages in a fast-paced laboratory setting. This role ensures accurate labeling, processing, and storage of specimens according to established procedures and regulatory standards, while providing clear, courteous explanations to patients and maintaining accurate records and data.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other blood draw procedures on patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric age groups.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, in a clear, courteous, and professional manner to help patients feel informed and comfortable.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and processing.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the order or script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow all procedures necessary for specimen transport in accordance with protocol to preserve specimen quality.
- Maintain accurate records and update patient information in the system as required.
- Perform routine specimen processing, including centrifugation and preparation for analysis or shipment.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner.
- Use Microsoft Office Suite and other computer systems to support documentation, labeling, and record maintenance.
- Phlebotomy skills with 0–2 years of experience performing venipunctures.
- Current phlebotomy certification.
- Valid Washington State Phlebotomy License.
- Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to draw blood and collect specimens from patients of all ages, from pediatric to geriatric.
- Experience with blood draws, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, and handle specimens according to test requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail when matching requisitions to specimens and verifying orders.
- Strong communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to inquiries.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Experience working with hard-to-stick patients is preferred.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced laboratory environment with a high volume of blood draws.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and requisitions efficiently.
- Ability to provide courteous, patient-focused service during all specimen collection procedures.
This position is based in a fast-paced laboratory setting focused on high-volume specimen collection and processing. The Phlebotomist will perform frequent blood draws on patients of all ages, from pediatric to geriatric, with an average of approximately 25 draws per patient. The role involves regular use of laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and record keeping. The environment requires adherence to strict safety, regulatory, and specimen-handling protocols to maintain specimen integrity and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Yakima, WA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
