Job Description
This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while supporting smooth laboratory workflows. Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients so they understand the process and what to expect.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and traceability.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the order or script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes in accordance with protocol.
- Follow different handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to preserve the quality and integrity of each specimen.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support safe and efficient laboratory operations.
- Update patient information accurately in the system or on records to ensure complete and correct documentation.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines during specimen collection, handling, and processing.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory result information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
- Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve processes and efficiency.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures to colleagues when needed.
- Deliver courteous, responsive customer service to patients, clinical staff, and other stakeholders during all interactions.
- Proven experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Ability to collect, label, and process blood and other specimens accurately according to established procedures.
- Proficiency using straight needles and butterfly needles for venipuncture on patients of all ages.
- Strong understanding of laboratory requisitions and the ability to match requisition forms to specimen tubes with complete accuracy.
- Skill in centrifuging specimens and handling specimen preparation steps such as splitting and freezing as required.
- Attention to detail in checking test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure 100% correctness.
- Knowledge of proper specimen storage requirements, including temperature control and appropriate collection containers.
- Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to follow all safety and regulatory guidelines in daily work.
- Competence in recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a laboratory environment.
- Effective communication skills to clearly explain collection procedures and respond to patient and staff inquiries.
- Customer service skills to interact professionally and empathetically with patients and healthcare staff.
- Ability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone in a clear and accurate manner.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- At least 2 years of hands-on phlebotomy experience.
- Pediatric and adult blood drawing skills, with the ability to work confidently with all age groups.
- Experience working in a medical or clinical laboratory environment with direct involvement in specimen processing.
- Familiarity with laboratory workflows, including specimen collection, processing, and transport logistics.
- Comfort using laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and handling multiple specimens simultaneously.
- Ability to update and manage patient information accurately in laboratory or clinical systems.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple orders, specimens, and tasks in a fast-paced setting.
- Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in phlebotomy and laboratory practices.
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you will perform frequent blood draws and specimen collections throughout the day. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brick, NJ.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
