Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, decontaminate equipment, and update patient information.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections, such as urine or fecal, in a clear and courteous manner.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and perform necessary labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing as required by test orders.
• Ensure accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.
• Place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately label them, and follow procedures specific to the protocol for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Phlebotomy skills, including blood draw and specimen collection.
• Customer service skills.
• Phlebotomy certification (as required by state).
• Experience with butterfly needles and laboratory processing.
• Knowledge of medical procedures related to drawing blood and specimen collection.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Pediatric and adult drawing skills, with the ability to work with all age groups.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 0-2 years of experience in a related field.

Work Environment

This position requires working in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting, handling various specimens and utilizing both straight and butterfly needles. The role demands adherence to safety regulations, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. The work environment involves frequent communication with patients and medical staff, requiring strong customer service skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Toms River, NJ.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Toms River,NJ.
