Job Title: Phlebotomist II – Patient Station

Job Description

This role performs advanced phlebotomy duties in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, supporting high-quality specimen collection, handling, and processing. The Phlebotomist II assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement while delivering courteous and clear communication to patients and healthcare staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws using venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and prevent errors.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport according to protocol, including proper temperature control and container selection.
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
  • Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain the integrity of specimens during handling and transport.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain detailed documentation of all collections and procedures.
  • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques to others, supporting training and skills development as needed.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow, and make recommendations for process improvements.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Attend annual department trainings and remain current with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
  • Provide courteous, patient-focused service and maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.50/hr.
