Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections for patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric populations. This role assists with troubleshooting, training, and making workflow improvement recommendations while delivering excellent customer service and maintaining strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood draws for a high volume of patients across pediatric to geriatric age groups while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw procedures, and other specimen collection processes such as urine or fecal collection to patients.
  • Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Demonstrate and use proper phlebotomy techniques with straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge, split, freeze, and package specimens for transport as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Store specimen samples at the correct temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Update and verify patient information accurately in the system and on all related documentation.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Fully understand and follow physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy before processing.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
  • Attend and complete required annual departmental trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Contribute to workflow improvements by assisting with troubleshooting and providing recommendations to enhance efficiency.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques, including use of straight and butterfly needles.
  • Ability to work effectively with pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
  • Strong attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions, and handling specimens.
  • Ability to follow established protocols for specimen collection, centrifugation, storage, and transport.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Approximately 1 year of overall work experience.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a fast-paced clinical laboratory or hospital environment.
  • Proven ability to be a reliable and skilled phlebotomist who can consistently obtain successful blood draws (“a good stick”).
  • Comfort handling multiple tasks such as specimen processing, data entry, and telephone inquiries.
  • Ability to read and understand physicians’ orders and laboratory requisitions.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and departmental education.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, onsite role with a standard schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position is based in a fast-paced clinical or hospital laboratory environment that involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages and collaboration with clinical staff. Work includes standing for extended periods while performing blood draws, handling biological specimens, and operating laboratory equipment such as centrifuges. The role requires consistent adherence to safety protocols, regulatory guidelines, and cleanliness standards in all work areas.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
