Job Description
The Clinical Pharmacist plays a crucial role in the review of prior authorization and appeal requests by evaluating clinical documentation and making coverage determinations based on established criteria. This position involves collaboration with prescribers, pharmacies, and internal teams to acquire necessary clinical information, document decisions, and communicate outcomes. The pharmacist ensures reviews are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulatory and client requirements while contributing to process improvements within the prior authorization program.
Responsibilities
- Review prior authorization and appeal requests.
- Evaluate clinical documentation to make coverage determinations.
- Collaborate with prescribers, pharmacies, and internal teams.
- Document decisions and communicate outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and client requirements.
- Contribute to process improvements within the prior authorization program.
- Active pharmacist license in the state of residence (PharmD required).
- Experience with prior authorization review.
- Ability to work efficiently in a production-driven environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality.
- Excellent verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with technology and digital platforms (e.g., Microsoft Office, shared documentation tools, PBM systems).
- Self-motivated with a positive, proactive, and solution-oriented mindset.
- Experience with multiple PBM platforms and payer-specific prior authorization workflows.
- Familiarity with medical benefit vs. pharmacy benefit coverage determinations.
- Exposure to appeals processing.
- Working knowledge of managed care, utilization management, or health plan operations.
- Experience in communicating clinical rationale to providers, pharmacies, or members.
- Comfort reviewing specialty medications (e.g., biologics, oncology, immunology, rare disease).
- Understanding of CMS, state-level, and payer regulatory requirements related to prior authorization.
- Experience using workflow, ticketing, or case management systems for clinical reviews.
- Ability to identify process inefficiencies and contribute to workflow or policy improvements.
This role offers a consistent, office-based schedule, providing relief from nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities common in retail or hospital settings. Work is performed primarily in an indoor office environment, with the majority of the workday spent seated at a desk using a computer keyboard, mouse, and calculator. Occasionally, the role may require lifting up to 15 pounds. The environment is collaborative and pharmacist-centric, promoting communication, shared knowledge, and continuous improvement.

This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $50.00 - $55.00/hr.
