Job Description
This Mobile Phlebotomist role provides skilled venipuncture and specimen collection services while floating between multiple patient service centers and a physician office location. You support high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and labeling samples, maintaining accurate documentation, and helping to optimize workflow in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will work with patients of all ages and play a key role in ensuring specimens are collected, handled, and transported according to established procedures and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, using appropriate techniques with straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy prior to processing.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following required procedures for temperature, containers, labeling, and documentation.
- Store specimen samples at appropriate temperatures and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes as outlined by protocol.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper test selection and specimen handling.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain clear, complete records of collections and processing activities.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a safe and compliant work area.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend annual department trainings and other required educational sessions to maintain current knowledge and skills.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, providing clear and professional communication.
- Identify workflow issues, assist in troubleshooting, and make recommendations to improve efficiency and service quality.
- Float between designated locations on a daily basis, adapting to different sites, workflows, and team structures.
- Complete an initial training period at a designated site and apply learned procedures consistently across all assigned locations.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2–4 years of overall work experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to perform blood draws and other specimen collections accurately and safely.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory requisitions.
- Strong attention to detail when labeling, matching requisitions, and verifying patient and test information.
- Ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety procedures.
- Capability to work with patients of all ages in a professional and compassionate manner.
- Comfort working in both fast-paced and variable environments, including working independently when required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in patient service centers, physician office settings, or similar outpatient environments.
- Experience handling 30–40 blood draws per day or similar volume.
- Ability to adapt quickly to different sites, workflows, and team structures as part of a float role.
- Strong communication skills to explain procedures, answer questions, and respond to phone inquiries.
- Ability to participate in and benefit from at least 2 weeks of initial training, with openness to additional training as needed.
- Color vision adequate to meet role requirements, including color vision screening.
- Familiarity with specimen packaging and transport procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
- Comfort using computers and laboratory information systems for patient updates and label generation.
Work Environment
This is a mobile, float position that requires traveling between eight locations, including patient service centers and one physician office-based IOP site in areas such as Utica, New Hartford, Rome, Barneveld, and Ilion, NY. You train at one primary site for at least two weeks before to float to alternate sites on a daily basis. The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday between 5:45 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. for 8-hour shifts, with Saturday shifts from approximately 6:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for 4.5 to 5.5 hours, with some variation. Daily workload can range from approximately 30 to 40 blood draws, and you may work at multi-person sites or at locations where you are the sole phlebotomist. The environment is clinical and patient-facing, serving individuals of all ages, and requires consistent adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards. Dress and appearance are expected to be professional and appropriate for a clinical setting.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $21.50 - $21.50/hr.
