Job Description

The Mechanical Piping Designer – P&ID Developer is responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining accurate Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) that support safe and efficient industrial operations. You will work closely with mechanical and process engineering teams to document system layouts, fluid flow, instrumentation, and control logic for complex industrial and manufacturing processes. This role requires strong technical expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and experience supporting both design-phase and as-built documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and maintain Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) using industry-standard design tools such as AutoCAD and AutoCAD P&ID.
  • Accurately represent piping systems, equipment, instrumentation, control loops, and process flow in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, process engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure design intent is captured correctly on P&IDs.
  • Produce clear, detailed P&ID documentation including equipment symbols, pipe specifications, instrumentation details, and control logic.
  • Ensure all P&IDs comply with applicable safety regulations, industry codes, standards, and project-specific guidelines.
  • Support component selection by coordinating with engineers on piping materials, valves, instruments, and associated equipment to ensure compatibility with process and safety requirements.
  • Manage P&ID change control by documenting revisions, tracking updates, and communicating changes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform thorough quality control reviews to validate the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of P&IDs with the project scope and safety guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain accurate as-built P&IDs that reflect actual system configurations following construction activities or field modifications.
  • Clearly communicate design concepts, changes, and technical details to team members, project stakeholders, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Provide guidance, training, and technical support to junior designers and drafters to help maintain high standards of engineering documentation.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of P&ID standards, templates, and best practices within the engineering team.
Essential Skills
  • 5–10 years of mechanical design experience with a strong focus on P&ID development for industrial or manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with P&ID development software such as AutoCAD and AutoCAD P&ID.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical design, or a closely related field.
  • In-depth understanding of industrial processes, equipment, piping systems, and instrumentation.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid mechanics as it relates to piping and instrumentation design.
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices related to P&ID development.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, high-quality engineering documentation for complex systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering standards, specifications, and project requirements to P&ID development.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working on industrial or power plant projects, particularly in environments with complex piping and instrumentation systems.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting both design-phase and as-built P&ID documentation.
  • Experience providing mentoring or technical guidance to junior designers or drafters.
  • Ability to manage multiple P&ID updates and revisions simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and documentation integrity.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain clear revision histories and change-control records.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in engineering documentation quality and consistency.
