Job Description
This Lab Technician role combines hands-on fiber optic lab support with shipping, receiving, and general office assistance for a small, fast-paced technical team. You will maintain and support lab equipment, assist engineers with fiber optic products and optical transceivers, and manage domestic and international shipments with accurate, traceable documentation. The position suits someone who enjoys practical technical work, is highly organized, and can handle time-sensitive requests with reliability and attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, organize, and monitor lab equipment to ensure reliability, availability, and cleanliness.
- Perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs on lab and facility equipment as needed.
- Support daily lab activities, including receiving, stocking, picking, and shipping of fiber optic products.
- Splice and terminate fiber optic cables for lab and engineering use.
- Work closely with engineers to support installation, testing, and repair of optical transceivers and fiber optic products.
- Follow all safety standards and regulatory requirements related to lab operations and fiber optic handling.
- Support trade shows and multi-vendor interoperability demonstrations from the lab, including preparation and logistics.
- Assist with RMA-related handling, including processing returns and coordinating internal projects as needed.
- Receive and monitor incoming packages, primarily via FedEx, verify contents against packing lists, and route deliveries appropriately to the engineering lab or other recipients.
- Package and ship items domestically and internationally while maintaining accurate and traceable shipping records.
- Prepare international shipping documentation, including commercial invoices, certificates of origin, and packing lists using Excel.
- Measure and weigh components and packaging to ensure accurate completion of shipping paperwork and compliance with shipping requirements.
- Complete AES filings to request ITN numbers and ensure compliance with export regulations.
- Utilize appropriate HTS codes for international shipments to support accurate customs documentation.
- Deliver incoming mail and provide light office operations support as needed.
- Assist with general office support duties for a small team, such as ordering office and kitchen supplies and coordinating copier needs.
- Maintain shipping and receiving documentation in an organized, traceable, and auditable manner.
- Support last-minute or priority shipping requests and adjust priorities to meet time-sensitive needs.
- Use computers and Microsoft 365 tools to manage documentation, communication, and basic data entry related to lab and shipping operations.
- Prior international shipping experience, preferably with FedEx.
- Experience preparing international shipping documentation, including commercial invoices, certificates of origin, packing lists, AES/ITN filings, and HTS codes.
- Hands-on experience in lab, electronics, telecommunications, or fiber optic environments.
- Practical background in fiber optics, transceiver handling, or lab-based technical support.
- Ability to handle, measure, and weigh small electronic components, typically in the 2–5 pound range.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook, and comfort using Microsoft 365 tools.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Reliable attendance and flexibility to support time-sensitive and priority requests.
- Attention to detail in documentation, labeling, and record-keeping for shipments and lab activities.
- Experience working in RMA environments, including handling returns and replacements, is a plus.
- Experience in telecom or datacom environments is an advantage.
- Familiarity with fiber optic testing and lab-based technical support activities.
- Comfort working closely with engineers on technical tasks such as optical transceiver installation, testing, and repair.
- Ability to support trade show preparations and multi-vendor interoperability demonstrations.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with internal stakeholders and external shipping partners.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe lab and shipping area.
You will work primarily in a lab and office environment that focuses on fiber optic products, optical transceivers, and related electronics. The role involves frequent interaction with lab equipment, fiber optic cables, and small electronic components, as well as regular use of computers and Microsoft 365 tools for documentation and communication. You can expect to handle daily shipping and receiving activities, including FedEx shipments, international documentation, and coordination with engineering staff. The setting is a small-team environment where flexibility, reliability, and collaboration are important. Work may include supporting time-sensitive shipments, trade show preparations, and multi-vendor interoperability demonstrations, requiring occasional adjustment of priorities to meet deadlines.

This is a Contract position based out of Los Angeles, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $40.00/hr.
