Job Description
The Intermediate Substation Engineer serves as a key technical contributor within a Transmission, Distribution and Renewables team, supporting utility, industrial and renewable energy projects across Canada. In this role, you participate in the engineering and design of transmission and distribution substation projects up to 500 kV, with a strong focus on brownfield upgrades, equipment replacements and infrastructure modernization. You work closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary project teams through all phases of design and execution, while deepening your expertise in high-voltage power systems and substation engineering.
Responsibilities
- Perform electrical engineering and detailed design activities for transmission and distribution substations up to 500 kV.
- Develop substation layouts, general arrangements, equipment plans and complete design packages in accordance with project and client standards.
- Participate in brownfield substation upgrades, equipment replacement projects and system expansion initiatives, with a focus on retrofit and modernization work.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, designers and project stakeholders to meet project milestones and deliver high-quality engineering deliverables.
- Prepare and review engineering drawings, technical specifications, equipment lists, calculations and other design documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Assist with substation equipment selection, including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnect switches and protection and control equipment.
- Review vendor documentation and technical submittals to confirm alignment with project requirements and industry standards.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews and project risk assessments to identify and mitigate technical and execution risks.
- Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, commissioning and startup activities as required.
- Apply power system knowledge to support equipment sizing, load analysis, grounding system design and power distribution design.
- Contribute to projects involving substation equipment, power distribution systems, motor control centers (MCCs) and industrial electrical infrastructure.
- Support proposal development, technical studies and project planning activities, including estimating and scope definition.
- Collaborate with clients and internal stakeholders, demonstrating strong communication and client-facing skills throughout project execution.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or immediately eligible for registration with EGBC or APEGA, or strong willingness to obtain this certification.
- 5–8 years of electrical engineering experience, including transmission and distribution or industrial power system design experience.
- Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution substations, power systems and substation equipment up to 500 kV.
- Demonstrated experience with brownfield substation upgrades and retrofit projects.
- Solid understanding of power system fundamentals, including electrical equipment selection, load analysis, grounding systems and power distribution design.
- Experience creating engineering drawings, technical reports, equipment specifications and vendor documentation.
- Hands-on experience with equipment replacement projects involving power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnect switches and protection and control equipment.
- Proficiency with ETAP (required or strongly preferred) for power system studies and analysis.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD (required or strongly preferred) for substation and electrical design.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, project teams and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capabilities within project or engineering team environments.
- Ability to work effectively in a utility, EPC, consulting, industrial, mining or oil and gas environment with a focus on high-voltage power systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting utility asset replacement or modernization programs.
- Background in renewable energy or industrial power system projects.
- Experience in proposal development, estimating and project planning for power delivery or substation projects.
- Exposure to Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning or construction support activities for substation and power system equipment.
- Experience working on power delivery projects for major utilities and power-sector clients.
- Familiarity with motor control centers (MCCs) and industrial electrical infrastructure.
- Ability to thrive in a large, multidisciplinary engineering and project delivery organization with a global footprint.
- Interest in long-term project stability and supporting large, multi-year utility initiatives.
Work Environment
This role is based in an office environment in Vancouver, where you work closely with a Transmission, Distribution and Renewables team on major utility and industrial projects across Canada. You collaborate daily with engineers, designers and project professionals in a structured, project-driven setting that emphasizes quality, safety and technical excellence.
The position is initially offered as a contract role tied to ongoing utility programs and capital projects, providing more stability than typical short-term project assignments and exposure to a sustained pipeline of work supporting critical electrical infrastructure. You use tools such as ETAP for power system analysis and AutoCAD for substation and electrical design, while engaging in regular coordination meetings, design reviews and project planning sessions.
