Job Title: Instrumentation and Controls Engineer
Job Description
The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer designs, analyzes, and implements control systems and process instrumentation for complex nuclear and heavy industrial facilities. This role focuses on preparing detailed engineering change packages, specifying and evaluating process instrumentation, and supporting digital control system upgrades across multiple nuclear projects in the United States. The engineer works closely with multidisciplinary project teams, contractors, and vendors to deliver high-quality, safe, and compliant solutions while contributing to large, high-visibility projects with significant growth potential.
Responsibilities
- Prepare comprehensive Engineering Change Packages for plant modification projects, including wiring diagrams, schematics, P&IDs, logic diagrams, instrument hookup details, and related documentation, with a strong focus on digital upgrade implementations.
- Develop detailed specifications for the control of plant process and auxiliary systems, ensuring reliability, safety, and compliance with applicable standards and project requirements.
- Prepare and review logic diagrams and system functional descriptions to support the implementation of system control logic into plant control systems.
- Evaluate, select, and specify process instrumentation for pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurements to ensure accurate and reliable plant operation.
- Perform engineering calculations for nuclear power plants, including instrument set-points, electrical loading changes, and other analyses required for safe and efficient plant performance.
- Support multiple concurrent projects by coordinating engineering activities with internal project teams, clients, contractors, and vendors to maintain schedule, quality, and budget objectives.
- Contribute to digital control system upgrade projects, including turbine and plant control systems, using platforms such as Ovation, Honeywell, and Schneider systems.
- Apply strong knowledge of engineering design and analysis to develop practical, robust solutions with minimal supervision.
- Lead and guide teams of engineers and technicians on assigned tasks and work packages, providing technical direction and oversight.
- Train and mentor junior engineering staff to support their professional development and ensure consistent engineering quality across the team.
- Interface effectively with other engineering disciplines, project management, clients, contractors, and vendors through clear written and verbal communication.
- Ensure adherence to nuclear regulations, industry standards, and standard nuclear design processes in all design and modification activities.
- Support field activities at operating nuclear plants as needed, including site walkdowns, data collection, and implementation support for engineering changes.
- Maintain the ability to obtain and uphold unescorted access to nuclear plants and other facilities requiring background checks.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Controls Engineering from an accredited four-year university, with a preference for a degree in Electrical Engineering.
- At least 5 years of overall experience in design, operations, or field service/support for power plants or heavy industrial facilities.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering, including hands-on work with automation and control systems.
- At least 3 years of experience related to the design of operating nuclear power plants in the United States.
- Familiarity with standard nuclear design processes and strong knowledge of nuclear regulations and industry standards.
- Demonstrated experience with electrical engineering principles, relay logic, and instrumentation and controls systems.
- Strong engineering design and analysis skills, with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Experience leading a team of engineers and technicians, including assigning work, providing technical guidance, and reviewing deliverables.
- Experience training and mentoring junior engineering staff in technical and project execution skills.
- Good written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical information and interface effectively with project team members, clients, contractors, and vendors.
- Ability to obtain unescorted access to nuclear plants and other facilities that require background checks.
- Field experience at an operating nuclear plant, including exposure to plant systems, procedures, and operating environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with nuclear projects throughout the United States, including modifications and upgrades at operating facilities.
- background in refinery, petrochemical, or other heavy industrial instrumentation and control applications.
- Experience supporting digital control upgrades for control systems, including turbine control upgrades.
- Familiarity with or experience using control system platforms such as Ovation, Honeywell, and Schneider systems.
- Ability to coordinate effectively across multiple projects and stakeholders while managing priorities and deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills that support collaboration within diverse, multi-level engineering teams.
- Motivation to contribute to large, new projects rather than backfill roles, with interest in long-term professional growth.
- Appreciation for working in an environment that includes both highly tenured staff and early- to mid-career engineers, fostering knowledge transfer and mentorship.
Work Environment
This role supports nuclear projects across the United States with a strong focus on digital control system upgrades and complex engineering modifications. The position offers an East Coast–based remote work arrangement, with flexibility for candidates who can travel to locations in North Carolina or New Jersey when needed; fully remote work is also possible for suitable candidates. The work environment includes collaboration with a robust, multi-level engineering team that combines highly experienced professionals with other engineers, creating a strong support network and mentorship culture. You will work with advanced control system technologies and platforms such as Ovation, Honeywell, and Schneider systems while engaging in large, new project initiatives that offer significant opportunities for professional growth. The organization provides paid time off and benefits, and fosters a stable yet growth-oriented environment, reflected in long employee tenures and ongoing expansion of project scope.
