Job Title: Test Technician – Navy Submarine Fire Control (AN/BYG-1 TCS)

Job Description

This role focuses on testing and troubleshooting the AN/BYG-1 Tactical Control System (TCS) that forms a core part of the submarine combat system used by the United States Navy and Royal Australian Navy. As a Test Technician with prior US Navy Submarine Fire Control Technician experience, you will help build and validate complex tactical control, weapons/payload control, information assurance, and tactical network subsystems. You will join a close‑knit, mission‑driven team that partners closely with the submarine community to deliver reliable systems that support high‑stakes national security missions.

Responsibilities

• Conduct subsystem and system-of-systems testing on TCS-related black boxes at the primary site and other locations as required.
• Perform hands-on testing and verification of the AN/BYG-1 Tactical Control System to ensure it meets system, functional, and performance requirements.
• Work in an Agile development environment alongside engineers across the program to verify deliveries to the Navy.
• Analyze test results to determine how software and hardware components satisfy defined system, functional, and performance requirements.
• Install, configure, and maintain test bays and associated equipment used to validate TCS and related subsystems.
• Troubleshoot anomalies and faults in the TCS and associated subsystems, independently diagnosing issues without direct access to developers.
• Collaborate proactively with engineers from other subsystems to identify where issues reside and drive resolution as a project team.
• Apply knowledge of test engineering concepts, principles, and theories to design, execute, and refine test procedures.
• Support subsystem testing, software testing, and integration activities in a DoD production delivery environment.
• Work closely with local and remote test team members to coordinate test activities, share findings, and maintain alignment across the program.
• Use requirements management and system modeling tools and processes to ensure test coverage and traceability.
• Communicate test results, issues, and recommendations clearly through verbal updates and written documentation using Microsoft Office tools.
• Provide clear, concise communication among peers and up the reporting chain, including recognition and escalation of relevant information.
• Travel as needed to additional facilities or partner locations to support testing and integration activities.
• Participate in off-shift and weekend work as required to support longevity testing and program milestones.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience with the US Navy’s AN/BYG-1 Tactical Control System (TCS).
• Strong US Navy Submarine Fire Control Technician experience, including practical operation and maintenance of submarine fire control systems.
• Prior US Navy Submarine experience, preferably with completion of submarine maintenance school at rank E4 or above.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot complex systems without direct access to software developers, including diagnosing hardware, software, and integration issues.
• Experience performing system testing, subsystem testing, and software testing in a DoD production delivery environment.
• Knowledge of test engineering concepts, principles, and theories as applied to complex defense systems.
• Experience working in an Agile development environment, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Experience working proactively with both local and remote test team members to coordinate testing and resolve issues.
• Knowledge of requirements management and system modeling, including how to align tests with requirements and system behavior.
• Solid verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to document test results and issues using Microsoft Office products.
• Ability and willingness to travel to other locations as needed for testing and integration activities.
• Active Secret security clearance or the ability to start with an Interim Secret clearance.
• Demonstrated ability to recognize relevant information, assess alternatives, and communicate issues and options clearly.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in the Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical System (SWFTS) submarine community.
• Experience in sonar, fire control, and related submarine combat system components.
• Familiarity with tactical control, weapons/payload control, information assurance, and tactical network subsystems.
• Experience using Agile practices and tools in a test and integration environment.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, mission-focused program with long-term funding and a large, multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to communicate effectively among peers and leadership, providing clear status updates and raising issues promptly.

Work Environment

This position is 100% onsite at NUWC facilities, with flexible seating available nearby at an associated Middletown, RI office. You will work in a secure defense environment focused on submarine combat systems, collaborating with approximately 150 professionals on a long-term program funded through at least 2027. The work involves hands-on interaction with test bays, black box hardware, and tactical control system equipment, as well as regular use of software tools for testing, documentation, and requirements management. The schedule is primarily standard working hours, but you will periodically support routine off-shift and weekend work to conduct longevity testing and meet critical program milestones. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport, RI.

The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
