  • Operate and properly use nuclear density gauges and other testing equipment to measure material properties and compaction.
  • Provide clear, accurate, and timely documentation of all findings, test results, and observations in both written and digital formats.
  • Tabulate, prepare, and submit daily reports and observations for transmittal to the project manager, ensuring that all data is complete and well organized.
  • Perform basic analysis and review of test data to verify accuracy before communicating results to the project manager and other project personnel.
  • Communicate effectively with the project manager, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractor representatives regarding site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection results.
  • Transport material samples from the field to the laboratory, ensuring that all samples are properly labeled and accompanied by accurate identifying documentation.
  • Maintain testing equipment in good working condition, including performing routine checks, cleaning, and calibration as required.
  • Follow all safety rules, procedures, and project-specific safety requirements, including performing pre-task planning prior to executing work.
  • Apply established quality control and quality assurance practices to ensure that testing and inspection work meets applicable standards and project specifications.
  • Utilize laptop computers and software such as Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare reports, data tables, and documentation.
  • Leverage experience and proficiency in multiple areas of field testing, inspection, and/or laboratory testing to support a variety of project needs.
  • Train and mentor lower-level technicians in proper testing, inspection, documentation, and safety practices as directed.
  • Lead the activities of other engineering technicians in the laboratory or on larger field projects when assigned, helping coordinate tasks and workflow.
  • Complete required internal safety certifications and apply this knowledge consistently in day-to-day work.
  • Drive to project sites using a company or personal vehicle as required, following all applicable driving and safety guidelines.

Essential Skills

Work Environment

The role is based in the Greensboro market, with work performed both at local project sites and at an office and laboratory in Greensboro. You will split time between field environments—such as active construction sites and outdoor testing locations—and a more controlled laboratory setting. Field work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, and active construction activities, while laboratory work offers a stable, controlled environment for detailed testing and analysis. The position uses specialized construction materials testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges and other field and laboratory instruments, as well as laptop computers with Microsoft Word and Excel for data entry and reporting. Work hours generally follow standard business hours, with the potential for schedule adjustments based on project needs and site access requirements. The environment emphasizes strong safety practices, structured procedures, and consistent work processes, making it well suited for professionals who value a combination of hands-on field work and controlled laboratory tasks within an organized and safety-focused setting.
