Position Overview
The Field Engineer supports day-to-day field operations on a large public transit infrastructure project. This role works closely with field supervision and engineering teams to ensure construction activities are performed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contract documents and quality standards.
Project Environment
This position supports a complex, multi-year public works project involving elevated guideway and station construction in an urban environment. Responsibilities include coordination of field operations, engineering support, safety compliance, cost control, quality assurance, and project closeout activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet daily with project crews to review production schedules and confirm availability of materials, equipment, and labor resources
- Collect, coordinate, and analyze shop drawings, design specifications, material requirements, and project data to ensure compliance with contract requirements
- Provide technical input to work planning and scheduling; identify risks related to production, materials, equipment, or construction processes that could impact cost or schedule
- Evaluate daily production, schedule, and budget performance; document activities using approved methods and technologies
- Track quantities and manage project cost coding to support accurate financial reporting
- Review and approve daily timecards; coordinate with payroll, office staff, and field supervisors to resolve discrepancies
- Review project specifications to support quality assurance before, during, and after construction activities
- Initiate, manage, and maintain required permits, inspections, certificates, and construction documentation
- Coordinate field layout activities with construction crews and engineering staff, ensuring utilities and existing services are identified prior to work
- Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and participate in weekly safety meetings to maintain a safe and compliant work environment
- Coordinate subcontractor work methods, schedules, and manpower as required
- Assist estimating efforts with schedules and technical input as needed
- Assist with development and review of design drawings and provide constructability input
- Support project closeout activities and reconcile closeout documentation with field teams and owner representatives
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related discipline
- Three (3) to six (6) years of civil construction field experience supporting heavy civil or public works projects
- Knowledge of construction means and methods, equipment, drawings, specifications, and applicable standards
- Understanding of construction scheduling processes and production time management
- Ability to analyze production, schedule, and cost data to support project performance tracking
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with field crews, supervisors, engineers, and support staff
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced construction environment
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and compliance
