Job Title: Environmental Health and Safety Specialist
Job Description

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist supports refinery operations by leading process safety management activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a strong safety culture across the organization. This role focuses on identifying and mitigating process hazards, managing changes to processes and equipment, investigating incidents, and delivering targeted safety training to employees at all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and coordinate comprehensive process hazard analyses for refinery operations, including HAZOP studies, What-If analyses, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Identify potential hazards in distillation and hydrotreatment units, document all findings, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and tracked to completion.
  • Oversee and manage the Management of Change (MOC) process for modifications to equipment, procedures, raw materials, and operating conditions.
  • Review and approve proposed changes to confirm they do not introduce new hazards or compromise existing safety systems.
  • Maintain current and accurate process safety information, including process flow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and safety data sheets for all chemicals used in the re-refining process.
  • Lead investigations of process safety incidents, near misses, and equipment failures using systematic root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Develop comprehensive corrective and preventive action plans based on incident investigations and communicate lessons learned across the organization.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response procedures specific to refinery hazards, including hydrocarbon releases, fire scenarios, and equipment failures.
  • Coordinate with local emergency responders and organize regular emergency drills and associated required training.
  • Actively support the injury management process to ensure affected personnel receive appropriate and timely care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with key personnel at designated clinics and ensure injury management protocols are robust and consistently applied.
  • Conduct regular audits and compliance assessments to ensure facilities meet OSHA, EPA, and other applicable local, state, and federal standards.
  • Ensure all hazardous and nonhazardous waste management activities and environmental operating permits are managed in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Provide comprehensive training to employees on safe work practices and maintaining a safe working environment through training sessions, presentations, conference calls, and safety material distribution.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs tailored to specific job functions and operational hazards within refinery operations.
  • Provide coordinated support for the Safety and Emergency Response program across all refinery operations.
  • Coach teams and individuals on Safety and Emergency Response tasks and activities to foster a culture of safety excellence.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and leadership to integrate safety considerations into daily activities and strategic initiatives.
  • Prioritize multiple safety-related tasks and projects and consistently meet deadlines in a dynamic operational environment.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or a related field.
  • 3 years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety roles within industrial or refinery environments.
  • Hands-on experience with process safety management, including process hazard analysis techniques such as HAZOP, What-If, and FMEA.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and relevant local, state, and federal regulations related to workplace safety, environmental compliance, and waste management.
  • Experience managing hazardous and nonhazardous waste in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, deliver, and facilitate safety training programs for diverse audiences.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing teams, projects, and safety initiatives across operational settings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with hourly employees, staff, contractors, and company leadership.
  • Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to assess complex issues and implement effective safety solutions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and consistently meet deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Commitment to fostering a proactive safety culture and promoting continuous improvement in EHS performance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent are preferred.
  • Experience leading incident investigations and root cause analyses in industrial or refinery settings.
  • Familiarity with developing and maintaining emergency response and crisis management procedures.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with external medical providers and emergency responders.
  • Skill in coaching and mentoring individuals and teams on safety and emergency response practices.
  • Comfort using technical documentation such as process flow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and safety data sheets.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing safety documentation, training records, and compliance reports.
Work Environment

This role operates primarily within refinery and industrial environments where process safety, environmental compliance, and workplace safety are critical priorities. The position involves frequent collaboration with operations, maintenance, and leadership teams, as well as interaction with external clinics and local emergency responders. Work may include time in both office settings for analysis, documentation, and training development, and in field settings for audits, inspections, training delivery, and emergency drills. The environment is dynamic and fast-paced, with multiple concurrent projects and deadlines, and requires a strong focus on safe work practices and adherence to established safety procedures.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.
