Job Description
The Environmental Engineer oversees all aspects of environmental compliance and sustainability for a manufacturing facility. This role prepares and maintains environmental permits, ensures adherence to state and federal regulations, and leads the implementation of the Environmental Management System. The Environmental Engineer provides technical support to operations, manages environmental reporting, and champions sustainable business practices across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Complete and maintain required government reports related to air quality, water quality, and solid waste management.
- Prepare applications for all necessary environmental permits and ensure permits are received, maintained, and kept current.
- Provide technical assistance to operations through environmental data analysis, process monitoring, and up-to-date knowledge of environmental systems and procedures.
- Lead the daily execution of the Environmental Management System and drive its continuous improvement.
- Lead efforts to achieve environmental compliance and foster a continuous improvement mindset within environmental, health, and safety activities.
- Maintain the Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) program and associated documentation.
- Maintain professional affiliations with external organizations such as regulatory and industry bodies to stay informed about environmental regulatory requirements and potential changes to federal and state rules.
- Monitor and interpret regulatory changes that could impact the facility and identify practical means for achieving and maintaining regulatory compliance.
- Maintain appropriate environmental compliance documentation and records in accordance with regulatory and permit requirements.
- Demonstrate and document compliance with all applicable state and federal environmental permitting requirements.
- Conduct engineering project reviews for all environmental-related projects to ensure compliance and minimize environmental impact.
- Compile and submit environmental data and reports as requested by the executive team.
- Train and coach managers to develop skills that improve engagement in environmental programs and initiatives.
- Supervise annual air emission testing and compliance tests, ensuring accurate documentation and timely completion.
- Maintain and update the Environmental Incident Report database, ensuring accurate tracking and follow-up of incidents.
- Manage all waste, recycling, and universal waste programs for the facility, including proper handling, storage, and disposal.
- Maintain monthly regulatory documentation and submit required state and federal environmental reports as specified in permits and environmental regulations.
- Serve as a champion for the implementation and ongoing development of sustainable business practices within the facility.
- Review the environmental impact of proposed chemicals and materials prior to use in the facility.
- Prepare and maintain facility Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPP) and ensure their effective implementation.
- Strong knowledge of environmental engineering principles and practices.
- Demonstrated experience with environmental compliance in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in preparing, maintaining, and managing environmental permits.
- Hands-on experience with environmental management systems and their daily execution.
- Working knowledge of SPCC (Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures) requirements and implementation.
- Experience with Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPP) and related documentation.
- Solid understanding of federal and state environmental regulations, including EPA regulations.
- Ability to analyze environmental data and monitor processes to support operational decision-making.
- Experience managing waste, recycling, and universal waste programs in an industrial setting.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills for state and federal environmental requirements.
- Ability to supervise environmental testing, including annual air emission and compliance tests.
- Effective training and coaching skills to engage and develop managers in environmental programs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a related field.
- At least 5 years of environmental compliance experience within a manufacturing environment or a closely related field.
- Experience maintaining professional affiliations with regulatory and industry organizations to stay current on environmental requirements.
- Familiarity with environmental incident reporting systems and database management.
- Experience reviewing environmental impacts of chemicals and materials in industrial applications.
- Background in engineering project review with a focus on environmental considerations.
- Ability to champion and promote sustainable business practices across a facility.
- Strong communication skills for collaborating with executives, managers, regulators, and operations teams.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple environmental programs, reports, and deadlines concurrently.
This role operates in a manufacturing facility environment with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday, averaging approximately 45–50 hours per week. The Environmental Engineer spends about 80% of the time in an office setting focused on analysis, documentation, permitting, and reporting, and about 20% of the time on the production floor supporting operations, monitoring processes, and overseeing environmental programs. The position requires regular interaction with operations personnel, management, and external regulatory contacts, and involves working with environmental monitoring systems, documentation tools, and regulatory reporting platforms.
