Job Title: Laboratory Technician – Gas Analysis
Job Description

The Laboratory Technician – Gas Analysis works in a modern analytical laboratory performing routine and non-routine analysis of medical and specialty gases to detect impurities and verify product quality. This hands-on role operates advanced analytical instrumentation, handles gas cylinders, and uses laboratory software while following strict quality, safety, and regulatory requirements. The position offers exposure to a growing industry, opportunities for long-term employment, and a structured rotating schedule with extended periods of time off.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical testing of gas samples for impurities using gas chromatography and spectroscopic techniques.
  • Connect gas cylinders to analytical systems within ventilated cabinets, initiate analysis runs, monitor performance, and safely disconnect cylinders upon completion, with each cylinder hook-up and removal taking up to 30 minutes per sample.
  • Operate and maintain gas chromatography systems, including GC and GCP-type instruments, using Galaxy/Compass GC control software.
  • Use Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometers to identify and quantify gas components and trace impurities.
  • Conduct analysis using CO₂ analyzers to measure carbon dioxide concentration and purity as required.
  • Upload, review, and document analytical results accurately in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Perform routine calibration, verification, and basic maintenance on analytical instruments to ensure accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Analyze finished medical and specialty gas products to confirm purity and conformance with internal specifications and customer requirements.
  • Calculate, prepare, and fill medical and specialty gas mixtures and pure gases using partial pressure and gravimetric techniques.
  • Test and certify incoming raw materials prior to use in production to ensure they meet required specifications.
  • Process cylinders for shipment, including painting, labeling, valve preparation, and generating certificates of analysis.
  • Maintain complete and accurate quality control records and documentation in compliance with internal policies and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Handle, move, and load gas cylinders as needed to support testing, production, and shipment activities.
  • Apply knowledge of chromatography, peak characteristics, and illusion order principles to interpret analytical data and troubleshoot results.
  • Work safely with toxic and hazardous chemicals, following established procedures, engineering controls, and safety guidelines.
  • Participate in all required safety training and activities, and actively contribute to maintaining a safe, compliant laboratory environment.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff, engineers, and quality personnel to resolve analytical issues and support continuous improvement.
  • Support Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and quality control standards in all laboratory operations.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, OR at least 2 years of analytical laboratory experience.
  • Hands-on experience in an analytical laboratory environment, either through professional roles, internships, or academic laboratory work.
  • Experience with chromatography techniques, particularly gas chromatography.
  • Ability to operate or learn GC and GCP-type systems and associated GC controlling software such as Galaxy/Compass.
  • Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis, or the ability to learn quickly.
  • Basic understanding of quality control principles and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Ability to handle toxic and hazardous chemicals safely, following written procedures and safety protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret chromatographic data, including peak characteristics, to assess product quality.
  • Comfort with using laboratory information systems, including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), for data entry and result review.
  • Capability to perform basic instrument calibration, verification, and routine maintenance.
  • Physical ability to handle, move, and load gas cylinders safely as part of daily work.
  • Willingness and ability to work a rotating schedule that includes day and night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Toxic chemical handling experience preferred, including working with extremely hazardous chemicals under controlled conditions.
  • Experience in gas analysis, medical gases, or specialty gases is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of illusion order and peak characteristics as they relate to chromatographic and spectroscopic data interpretation.
  • Background or coursework as a Laboratory Technician or Chemical Engineer is advantageous.
  • Experience with CO₂ analyzers and gas handling systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with partial pressure and gravimetric techniques for preparing gas mixtures is desirable.
  • Entry-level graduates with relevant chemical handling experience from school laboratories or internships are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot analytical issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in a structured, quality-focused environment with minimal supervision.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a growing industry, with potential for conversion from contract to permanent employment.
Work Environment

The role is based in a very clean, organized chemistry laboratory that operates 24/7 to support continuous gas production and analysis. The laboratory uses advanced equipment, including gas chromatography (GC and GCP-type systems), Galaxy/Compass GC control software, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, CO₂ analyzers, gas handling systems, ventilated cabinets, and a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Work involves frequent handling of gas cylinders and regular exposure to extremely hazardous and toxic chemicals, managed through strict safety protocols, engineering controls, and comprehensive training. The position follows a DuPont rotating schedule that provides around-the-clock coverage, with employees rotating between day and night shifts in structured blocks. The schedule includes weekends and holidays based on the rotation rather than a traditional Monday–Friday pattern, and it is published well in advance, offering longer stretches of consecutive days off compared to a standard workweek. The environment emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, quality control, and opportunities for professional growth. Benefits for consultants include eight paid holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day) and vacation/PTO accrual of 40 hours for every six months of tenure, with the potential for conversion to a permanent role based on performance.
