What are the responsibilities and job description for the Distribution Engineer position at Actalent?
Job Title: Medium Voltage Distribution Engineer
Job Description
This position offers an opportunity for an experienced Medium Voltage Distribution Engineer to join a growing infrastructure team focused on power delivery, microgrids, battery storage, and alternative energy. You will design and deliver medium voltage underground and overhead distribution projects, working closely with a Senior Engineer and a small, collaborative team. The role can be based on-site in Missoula, MT, Billings, MT, or Boise, ID, with potential for remote work for candidates who bring extensive, directly relevant experience. This position is designed to grow into a Project Engineer role and provides broad exposure across all aspects of power distribution engineering rather than narrow production tasks.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver medium voltage underground and overhead distribution projects under the direction of a Senior Engineer.
- Produce detailed electrical and physical design drawings using AutoCAD for medium voltage distribution systems.
- Perform power system modeling and engineering calculations, including load flow, short circuit analysis, and cable ampacity studies.
- Conduct structure analysis and sag and tension studies for overhead distribution lines.
- Size and specify medium voltage equipment in the 5 kV to 35 kV range to meet project and client requirements.
- Collaborate closely with drafters, clients, and project team members to coordinate design efforts and resolve technical issues.
- Manage approximately two to four active projects at a time, balancing priorities and meeting project schedules and budgets.
- Apply National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements to ensure safe and compliant designs.
- Use power system modeling tools such as ETAP, EasyPower, or PSSE to analyze and validate distribution system performance.
- Support document review and markup processes, contributing to high-quality deliverables and clear project documentation.
- Develop increasing autonomy in project execution, becoming the engineer who can take a task with minimal detail and work through specifics to deliver accurate results.
- Actively pursue Professional Engineer licensure, building toward progression into a Project Engineer role.
- Contribute to the direction and growth of a small, close-knit infrastructure team within a larger organization by sharing ideas, feedback, and technical insights.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
- 5 or more years of experience in medium voltage distribution design, including underground and/or overhead distribution systems.
- Demonstrated experience producing medium voltage design drawings and specifying equipment in the 5 kV to 35 kV range.
- Proficiency in power system modeling using ETAP, EasyPower, or PSSE.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for creating electrical and physical design drawings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification obtained or actively scheduled, with active pursuit of Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
- Experience in distribution design for both underground utilities and overhead systems.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision once up to speed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with overhead distribution line design, including structure analysis and pole loading considerations.
- Proficiency in SpidaCalc or PLS-CADD for structure analysis and pole loading calculations.
- Experience with Bluebeam for document review and markup.
- Experience with Substation Design BIM software.
- Background in power distribution, electrical design, and power delivery projects.
- Interest in or exposure to microgrids, battery storage, and alternative energy projects.
- Ability to grow into a Project Engineer position and take on increased responsibility over time.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with a small, close-knit engineering team and external stakeholders.
Work Environment
The role is based within a smaller, close-knit infrastructure group that operates as part of a larger, well-funded architecture and engineering organization. The preferred work locations are Missoula, MT, Billings, MT, or Boise, ID, with the option for hybrid or flexible schedules for on-site team members. Fully remote work may be considered for candidates with strong experience in utility distribution systems who can operate independently. The team uses tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, EasyPower, PSSE, SpidaCalc or PLS-CADD, Bluebeam, and Substation Design BIM software to deliver projects. The environment emphasizes professional growth in all aspects of power delivery, including underground and overhead distribution, substation design, microgrids, battery storage, and alternative energy, and encourages engineers to develop from task-level work into broader project engineering responsibilities. Dress code expectations align with a professional engineering office setting and may vary slightly depending on whether work is performed on-site, in the field, or remotely.
