Job Title: Distribution DesignerJob Description

The Distribution Designer plays a key role in designing overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities that support safe, reliable, and cost-effective power delivery. This position focuses on creating detailed site designs and construction drawings, preparing complete project packages, and maintaining accurate records and GIS data. The role combines office-based design work with field site visits and requires close collaboration with internal teams, external stakeholders, and customers in a growing power delivery environment.

Responsibilities
  • Apply company and client policies and procedures to develop site designs for overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities, including reconductoring, conversions, cable replacement, customer projects, and reliability jobs.
  • Conduct site visits as needed, including taking field notes, performing visual inspections, documenting equipment inventories, recording measurements, and assessing field conditions using electronic tools.
  • Prepare detailed site drawings and construction sketches in MicroStation and GNetviewer for various electrical facility installations, ensuring designs are cost-effective and maximize safety and service reliability in alignment with client standards.
  • Create complete project and job packages in Expert Designer and BOUD, including accurate material estimates and material requisitions for distribution electrical projects.
  • Properly apply company and client standards to each project design to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records and files for all projects and update the appropriate company and client GIS systems to reflect current design and construction information.
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external customers, builders, developers, electricians, other utilities, and city officials to support effective project execution.
  • Support both company and client business goals and expectations while consistently representing yourself in a positive and professional manner.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, management, and customers to coordinate project activities, clarify requirements, and resolve issues.
  • Work cohesively within a team-based environment, contributing to a variety of projects and tasks and supporting the continued growth of the power delivery team.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of experience in electric distribution drafting and design using AutoCAD, OR a design-based Associate Degree with transferable design software experience and foundation.
  • Proficiency in electric distribution drafting and design principles, including overhead and underground facilities.
  • Strong AutoCAD skills for creating accurate and detailed distribution design drawings.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, management, and customers in both written and verbal forms.
  • Demonstrated desire and ability to work in a team-based environment and collaborate cohesively with team members on multiple projects and tasks.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions and to solve practical problems in the field and office.
  • Commitment to conduct project site visits as needed, including performing field measurements, inspections, and documentation.
  • Comfort using electronic tools for field data collection, documentation, and design-related activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with MicroStation for preparing site drawings and construction sketches.
  • Familiarity with GNetviewer for viewing and working with electrical distribution designs.
  • Experience preparing project and job packages in Expert Designer and BOUD or similar design software tools.
  • Engineering or Engineering Technology degree is preferred.
  • Familiarity with electrical distribution components and concepts, including transformers, permitting processes, and fielding practices.
  • Experience with Katapult or Esri-based tools for GIS and mapping-related work.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with builders, developers, electricians, other utilities, and city officials.
  • Interest in working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment with opportunities across multiple industries.
  • Professional demeanor and ability to positively represent the organization while supporting long-term grid and infrastructure reinvestment initiatives.
Work Environment

This role is primarily onsite in a small, close-knit, and quiet office environment, fostering collaboration and focused project work. The position is onsite five days a week initially, with the opportunity to transition to a hybrid schedule after approximately 12 months. The standard work hours are first shift, Monday through Friday, with flexible start and end times, typically around 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dress code is casual in the office, with the expectation that you may occasionally work in the field and should have appropriate clothing available for site visits. The role may involve customer-facing interactions during field work or project meetings. You will work within a multidisciplinary engineering firm whose power delivery team is growing due to increased project business and long-term commitments to reinvest in local grid and infrastructure, providing exposure to multiple industries while remaining within the same organization.

This is a Contract position based out of Louisville, KY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
