The Structural Designer / Steel Detailer develops precise 3D models and fabrication-ready drawings that support complete industrial process systems, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams. This position requires deep understanding of structural steel, connections, fabrication, erection, and constructability in industrial environments rather than commercial building drafting.
Responsibilities- Develop detailed 3D structural steel models using Autodesk Advance Steel for heavy industrial facilities.
- Produce fabrication and shop drawings, erection drawings, assembly drawings, and construction drawings from Advance Steel models.
- Model and detail beams, columns, bracing, trusses, equipment supports, platforms, stairs, handrails, structural towers, pipe racks, conveyor galleries, and miscellaneous steel components.
- Create structural models that support baghouses, cyclones, silos, hoppers, conveyors, rotary dryers, process ductwork, stacks, and other industrial process equipment.
- Develop and detail structural steel connections in accordance with engineering requirements and design criteria.
- Interpret engineering calculations, sketches, specifications, and design criteria and translate them into accurate models and drawings.
- Design foundation layouts, anchor bolt plans, embed plans, and reinforced concrete details to support structural systems.
- Generate and verify bills of material, material lists, and material quantities to support procurement and fabrication.
- Apply knowledge of welding symbols, bolted connections, fabrication practices, and steel erection requirements to ensure constructable designs.
- Coordinate structural models with mechanical equipment, ductwork, piping, conveyors, electrical systems, foundations, and construction requirements.
- Perform clash detection to identify interferences, access issues, fabrication concerns, and constructability challenges before they reach the shop or field.
- Review vendor drawings and incorporate equipment requirements into structural models and details.
- Collaborate directly with Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Fabrication, and Construction teams to resolve technical and constructability issues.
- Support fabrication, construction, installation, and commissioning activities, including resolving field fit-up and installation issues.
- Perform quality-control reviews of models, connection details, bills of material, and drawings prior to release.
- Maintain accurate models, drawing revisions, and project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Occasionally travel to project sites for field measurements, verification, and construction support.
- Contribute to typical projects such as dust collection and air pollution control systems, baghouses and cyclones, rotary dryers, pneumatic conveying systems, bulk material handling systems, conveyors, bucket elevators, conveyor galleries, silos, hoppers, process ductwork, structural towers, pipe racks, equipment platforms, stair towers, stack structures, equipment support structures, heavy industrial foundations, and complete turnkey industrial facilities.
- At least 5 years of professional structural steel design and detailing experience, preferably in heavy industrial, EPC, manufacturing, mining, cement, aggregate, power generation, material handling, or similar environments.
- Hands-on professional experience with Autodesk Advance Steel, including recent and extensive use on complex structural projects.
- Strong proficiency in developing detailed 3D structural steel models using Autodesk Advance Steel.
- Proven ability to produce fabrication and shop drawings as well as erection drawings from Advance Steel models.
- Professional experience with AutoCAD and solid working knowledge of structural steel framing and connection detailing.
- Thorough understanding of welding symbols, bolted connections, fabrication practices, and steel erection methods.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, structural calculations, specifications, fabrication drawings, and construction documents.
- Experience designing equipment support structures, platforms, stairs, towers, conveyor galleries, pipe racks, or similar industrial structures.
- Experience creating foundation layouts, anchor bolt plans, embed plans, and detailed concrete drawings.
- Experience generating and verifying bills of material and material quantities for structural steel projects.
- Strong understanding of constructability and the relationship between engineering, fabrication, and field installation.
- Familiarity with AISC, OSHA, IBC, and other applicable structural and construction standards.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-track EPC environment.
- Experience discussing and documenting the types and complexity of structures modeled in Autodesk Advance Steel, including connection detailing, BOM generation, and interaction with fabrication and field construction teams.
- Experience with SDS2, Revit, or other structural and BIM platforms is valuable.
- Background working on projects in industries such as cement, lime, mining and minerals, steel, foundries, battery and recycling, carbon black, food processing, pet food, grain handling, ethanol, plastics, biomass, alternative fuels, power generation, or industrial manufacturing.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with mechanical, electrical, and civil disciplines as well as project management and field services.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, project-driven environment with evolving priorities and deadlines.
This is a full-time, onsite position based in an office in Overland Park, Kansas. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $75000.00 - $110000.00/hr.
