The Continuous Improvement Specialist drives operational excellence across a fast-paced manufacturing environment by evaluating current processes, uncovering inefficiencies, and leading improvement initiatives using Lean and related methodologies. This role partners closely with cross-functional teams, spending significant time on the production floor to observe operations, gather data, and implement sustainable changes that enhance safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance. It is a strategic, high-impact position focused on embedding continuous improvement practices and building a culture of engagement and problem solving throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate kaizen events, workshops, and training sessions to drive continuous improvement across manufacturing and production processes.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and actively encourage employee engagement in identifying and implementing process enhancements.
  • Develop, track, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor progress toward improvement goals and operational targets.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement at all levels of the organization, from the production floor to supporting functions.
  • Conduct detailed data analysis to identify root causes of issues and develop effective, sustainable solutions using Lean principles.
  • Implement process changes, monitor results, and adjust as needed to ensure long-term effectiveness and sustainability of improvements.
  • Apply problem-solving tools such as root cause analysis, 5S, and visual management to streamline workflows and reduce waste.
  • Train, coach, and mentor employees and teams on Lean, continuous improvement methodologies, and problem-solving techniques.
  • Conduct audits to ensure compliance with established processes, standards, and best practices, and identify areas requiring corrective action or improvement.
  • Spend approximately 50% of the time on the production floor, observing processes, gathering data, and making practical, hands-on improvement suggestions.
  • Perform cycle time studies, process mapping, and sequencing of operator tasks to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for optimization.
  • Develop project charters and define measurable goals and success criteria for continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders to align improvement projects with business priorities and operational needs.
  • Take a hands-on approach to implementing improvements, which may include designing and building practical solutions such as racking or shelving systems.
  • Navigate ambiguity and work effectively in an environment where processes are not yet clearly defined, helping to establish structure and standards over time.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in continuous improvement, process improvement, project management, or operational excellence roles.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Lean principles, Lean manufacturing, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Hands-on experience with kaizen events and driving structured improvement activities.
  • Proficiency with problem-solving tools such as root cause analysis, 5S, and visual management.
  • Ability to conduct data analysis, including cycle time studies and process mapping, to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Automotive industry experience is preferred.
  • Experience developing KPIs and performance dashboards for operational excellence initiatives.
  • Operational excellence or Lean Six Sigma environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams through change and improvement initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • A mindset focused on continuous learning, adaptability, and driving sustainable change.
