Job Description

The Construction Project Manager – Transmission (Project Manager III) oversees medium to large-scale transmission and substation projects from concept through completion. This role manages project scope, schedule, budget, and delivery while leading multi‑discipline teams and mentoring less experienced staff. The position requires strong technical understanding of transmission, substation, and power delivery projects, along with proven project management expertise and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple medium to large-scale transmission and substation projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and in accordance with quality and safety standards.
  • Define and manage project scopes, timelines, budgets, and deliverables for transmission line, substation, and power distribution projects.
  • Coordinate and direct multi-discipline engineering and construction teams, including electrical, civil, and utility design professionals.
  • Oversee substation and transmission line design activities, including electrical design, relay, and power distribution components, ensuring alignment with utility standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage project documentation and change orders, tracking scope changes and their impact on schedule and budget, and obtaining necessary approvals.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for stakeholders, clearly communicating project status, risks, and issues, and providing timely updates and reports.
  • Apply project management processes, principles, and methodologies to plan, execute, monitor, and close projects effectively.
  • Identify project risks and issues, perform critical analysis, and implement mitigation strategies based on accurate and timely data.
  • Mentor and support staff and junior project team members, fostering their professional growth and development in transmission and utility projects.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to understand their needs and values and use that understanding to motivate team behaviors and drive successful project outcomes.
  • Exercise sound judgment and creativity in solving complex project challenges and making decisions that balance technical, financial, and operational considerations.
  • Adapt to changing environments, shifting priorities, and uncertainty by re‑prioritizing tasks and adjusting project plans as needed.
  • Ensure effective project coordination among engineering, construction, and utility operations to support power delivery and high-voltage infrastructure.
  • Utilize tools such as AutoCAD and other design software to review and coordinate substation and transmission design work where applicable.
  • Support continuous improvement of project management practices within the business unit, sharing lessons learned and best practices across projects.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Information Systems, utility industry, or an equivalent combination of college coursework and experience as a Project Manager or in related responsibilities defining and managing project scopes, timelines, budgets, and delivery equaling four (4) years.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of related project management experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification required, or ability to obtain PMP certification within 12 months of hire if approved by the project management peer group.
  • Proven experience managing multiple medium to large-scale projects simultaneously.
  • Extensive understanding of project management processes, principles, and methodologies.
  • Strong functional and technical knowledge of transmission, substation, power delivery, and utility design practices and procedures.
  • Hands-on experience with transmission projects, including high-voltage and power delivery infrastructure.
  • Experience with substation engineering and design, including electrical design, relay, and power distribution systems.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for reviewing and coordinating substation and electrical design work.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with experience directing multi-discipline teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical and project information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Strong negotiation and people management skills to manage stakeholders and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Advanced critical thinking and creativity skills, with the ability to perform accurate and timely analyses and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to understand stakeholder and team member needs and values and use that insight to motivate and influence behaviors and results.
  • Proven ability to adapt to changing environments, shifting priorities, and uncertainty while maintaining project momentum.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Comprehensive functional and technical knowledge of the business unit’s line of business, practices, and procedures is preferred.
  • Experience in utility industry projects, particularly power delivery, transmission lines, and substation construction.
  • Experience in electrical engineering or closely related engineering disciplines is highly beneficial.
  • Experience in construction project coordination, including change order management and field coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior staff and emerging project managers.
  • Desire to continue learning and growing professionally, staying current with industry standards and project management best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach to working across engineering, construction, and operations teams.

Work Environment

This role operates in a hybrid work environment, typically spending 2–3 days in the office and 2–3 days onsite at utility facilities in the Phoenix area. The position involves regular collaboration with engineering and construction teams working on high-voltage transmission and substation projects. You will use standard office technology, project management tools, and design software such as AutoCAD, while also visiting active project sites to coordinate work, review progress, and address field issues. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $95.00 - $115.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
