Job Title: Construction Materials Technician

Job Description

The Construction Materials Technician performs field testing and inspection services on a variety of construction projects for private, municipal, state, county, and transportation agencies. This role focuses on on-site testing of concrete, soils, aggregates, asphalt, steel, and related materials to verify that they meet project specifications and standards. The technician documents test results and daily field activities, communicates findings to project stakeholders, and supports construction administration and inspection tasks. The position involves regular local travel to job sites and requires flexibility for overtime and weekend work.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quality control testing at project sites on concrete, soils, masonry, asphalt, aggregate, and reinforcing steel to verify compliance with project specifications and standards.
  • Conduct construction administration and inspection services for roadway, bridge, municipal utility, and infrastructure projects at state, county, and local levels.
  • Inspect construction activities to ensure contractor compliance with applicable specifications, plans, proposals, and requirements for roadway and bridge projects.
  • Verify plan quantities and calculations against as-bid plans and maintain accurate documentation of measurements and test results.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain project records and reports in a clear and timely manner, ensuring all testing and inspection activities are properly documented.
  • Communicate regularly with project engineers, owners’ representatives, project managers, contractors, and other on-site personnel regarding project status, test results, and field observations.
  • Identify non-conforming work or materials and promptly notify the contractor and/or project engineer, providing detailed information to support corrective actions.
  • Support construction materials testing and inspection work as assigned, including additional duties designated by the project engineer.
  • Travel locally to various construction sites and adapt to changing schedules, project demands, and weather conditions.
  • Work overtime, including weekends when necessary, to meet project timelines and support field operations.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Basic understanding of blueprints and construction drawings to interpret project plans and specifications.
  • Ability to perform construction materials testing, including concrete testing, soil testing, and use of nuclear density gauges and nuclear gauges.
  • Knowledge of construction inspection practices and construction materials testing principles.
  • Familiarity with concrete testing procedures and American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards.
  • ACI certification and/or Nuclear Gauge certification, strongly preferred for immediate field work.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule based on weather conditions, workload, and project requirements.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on active construction sites.
  • Ability to work overtime, including weekends, when project needs require extended hours.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with project engineers, owners’ representatives, contractors, and other on-site personnel.
  • Strong attention to detail for accurate testing, recordkeeping, and reporting of field activities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Construction materials testing experience is preferred, including exposure to CMT and inspection work.
  • Experience with construction inspection for roadway, bridge, and municipal infrastructure projects is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with state transportation and infrastructure standards, including ODOT-related work, is advantageous.
  • ACI certification, NICET certification, ODOT certifications, and NETTCP certifications are strongly valued and supported.
  • Understanding of construction processes, quality control procedures, and contractor compliance requirements.
  • Ability to learn and apply new testing methods and inspection standards through provided training.
  • Relevant technical or construction-related degree is welcomed, even without prior experience, with training provided to build field competency.

Work Environment

This role is based 100% in the field on active construction sites, including private developments, transportation projects, municipal work, and utility infrastructure. The technician works outdoors in varying weather conditions and must be comfortable navigating busy job sites with heavy equipment and ongoing construction activities. The position requires regular local travel between sites and flexibility to adjust hours based on project needs, weather, and workload, including overtime and weekend shifts when necessary. Field work involves using testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges and other construction materials testing tools, following established safety procedures and site protocols.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
