Job Title: CMT / Special Inspector (Senior Engineering Field Technician)
Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to serve as a Senior Engineering Field Technician within a growing Construction Materials Testing (CMT) and Special Inspections department. You will perform field inspections and testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials for industrial, commercial, residential, and municipal projects, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and project specifications. The position suits a detail-oriented professional who enjoys working both independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, field-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate field inspections of construction materials, including soils, concrete, and asphalt, for industrial, commercial, residential, and municipal projects in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Conduct required materials testing in the field and laboratory using applicable ASTM and NCDOT testing methods, ensuring reliable and repeatable results.
  • Read and interpret design drawings and construction specifications to understand project requirements and inspection criteria.
  • Observe construction work procedures and verify that materials and workmanship comply with job specifications and relevant codes.
  • Prepare, complete, and submit accurate and detailed inspection reports and test data sheets in a timely manner.
  • Use tablets and computer software, including iPads, Microsoft Office, email, and cloud-based systems such as OneDrive, to document and share test results and reports.
  • Interact and communicate professionally with general contractors, site supervisors, architects, structural engineers, and client representatives to discuss findings, clarify requirements, and support project progress.
  • Apply mathematical formulas and basic engineering principles in the field to calculate measurements, perform adjustments, and interpret test results.
  • Operate and maintain testing equipment, such as nuclear gauges and other materials testing instruments, in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Support project management activities related to construction inspections and materials testing, including scheduling, coordination, and documentation.
  • Work safely on active construction sites, following all safety procedures and using proper personal protective equipment.
  • Travel to various project locations as required, using a company or personal vehicle in a safe and responsible manner.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years of experience performing onsite inspections and testing of various construction materials such as soils, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, with the ability to apply mathematical formulas and basic engineering principles to determine field adjustments and interpret test results.
  • Proficiency in using iPads, Microsoft Office applications, email, and OneDrive for documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively within a team, maintaining a strong attention to detail and a quality-focused mindset.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to prepare clear reports and interact effectively with project stakeholders.
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, kneel, twist, grasp with hands, reach with arms, raise hands above head, sit, climb, balance, and work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Capability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 90 pounds on occasion.
  • Ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain and to stand for up to 8 hours on a normal day and up to 12 hours on occasion.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain relevant ACI, ICC, and NCDOT certifications required for construction materials testing and special inspections.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to and between project sites.
  • Ability to successfully complete a post-offer fit-for-duty test.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with construction inspections, construction materials testing, and concrete testing and inspections.
  • Familiarity with nuclear gauge operation and aggregate testing procedures.
  • Background or education in civil engineering or related fields, including exposure to engineering concepts such as CEI (Construction Engineering and Inspection) or EIT (Engineer-in-Training) experience.
  • Knowledge of ICC (International Code Council) inspection standards and I.C.C. certification pathways.
  • Understanding of NCDOT standards and procedures for materials testing and construction inspection.
  • Desired certifications, or progress toward them, such as ACI / NCDOT Concrete Field Technician Level 1, ICC Soils, Hazmat Certification, NCDOT Concrete Field, NCDOT Intro to Asphalt, NCDOT Nuclear Density, and NCDOT Erosion & Sediment Control.
  • Strong project management awareness, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time, and support multiple concurrent projects.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a plus.
Work Environment

This position is based out of an office in the Hillsborough or Raleigh area and involves extensive fieldwork on active construction sites. You will split your time between the office and various project locations, working outdoors in a range of weather conditions and on rough or uneven terrain. The role requires standing for extended periods, frequent walking, bending, and lifting, as well as working in confined spaces and at heights. You will use field testing equipment such as nuclear gauges and other materials testing instruments, along with technology tools including iPads, Microsoft Office, email, and cloud-based storage. The work schedule typically follows standard daytime hours, with occasional extended days of up to 12 hours depending on project needs. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and safety-focused, with an emphasis on quality, professional development, and supporting a diverse and inclusive workplace. Appropriate field attire and personal protective equipment are required to meet safety and site-specific standards.

The pay range for this position is $41000.00 - $72800.00/yr.
