What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cad Technician position at Actalent?
Job Description
The CAD Design Technician uses advanced computer-aided design (CAD) tools to create precise 2D and 3D models that support engineering and manufacturing projects, with a strong emphasis on electrical power and control systems. This role combines expert-level AutoCAD drafting, field data collection, and electrical design knowledge to translate real-world conditions into accurate, code-compliant drawings. The position works closely with electrical engineers, designers, and plant personnel to deliver high-quality design packages that meet project requirements and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed electrical drawings in AutoCAD, including power and control wiring diagrams, instrumentation loops, electrical schematics, cable tray layouts, electrical and instrumentation details, and cable schedules.
- Produce accurate 2D and 3D AutoCAD models based on field findings, engineering input, and project specifications.
- Ensure all drawings comply with internal standards, safety requirements, and applicable industry codes.
- Conduct on-site field visits to gather measurements, verify existing installations, and collect data needed for new or revised designs.
- Document field conditions thoroughly, including measurements, equipment labeling, routing information, and site photos, and translate this information into updated engineering drawings.
- Interface with plant personnel during field visits to clarify equipment access, layouts, and existing electrical infrastructure.
- Apply a strong understanding of electrical power distribution systems when developing and updating design packages.
- Perform sizing and selection of circuit breakers and other protective devices as required for electrical design projects.
- Read, interpret, and update one-line diagrams, panel schedules, and equipment lists to reflect current and proposed conditions.
- Collaborate with project teams, including engineers and designers, throughout the design, review, and revision process.
- Support design reviews by providing timely drawing updates, design clarifications, and field verification when needed.
- Maintain organized documentation and revision control across multiple concurrent projects to ensure accuracy and traceability.
- Contribute to process control technology and mechanical and engineering design efforts by providing accurate CAD support and coordination with other disciplines.
- Approximately 7 years of CAD design and drafting experience, preferably focused on electrical power and control systems.
- Expert-level AutoCAD experience, including the ability to create electrical drawings from scratch and efficiently modify complex existing drawings.
- Strong proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD drafting for electrical design applications.
- Deep knowledge of electrical design principles, including breaker sizing, load calculations, and power distribution layouts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of power distribution systems and layouts, and how they integrate into overall electrical designs.
- Proven experience reading, interpreting, and updating electrical schematics and documentation of modifications.
- Experience conducting field measurements and developing designs based on real-world site data.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and plant personnel in both office and field settings.
- Strong attention to detail, with a focus on accuracy, thorough documentation, and consistent drawing standards.
- Solid understanding of control systems, automation, and instrumentation as they relate to electrical design.
- Experience working on projects that involve process control technology and mechanical and engineering design interfaces.
- Familiarity with instrumentation loops, cable schedules, and electrical and instrumentation details within industrial environments.
- Comfort working across multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining organized documentation and revision control.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with cross-functional project teams and plant personnel during field and design activities.
- Ability to work independently in the field to gather data and verify conditions, and then translate findings into clear, accurate CAD deliverables.
The role operates in a mixed work environment that combines office-based CAD work with periodic field visits. Office work typically takes place in a cubicle or desk setting using CAD workstations and related engineering tools. The position follows a hybrid arrangement that may include a blend of remote work and on-site presence, depending on project needs. Approximately 25% travel is expected, primarily for field visits to industrial and plant sites. Most trips are 1–2 days within driving distance of about five hours or less, using company-provided fleet vehicles. Some assignments may require air travel for site visits. Typical site locations include facilities in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. Field work involves visiting active plant environments to gather measurements, verify installations, and coordinate with on-site personnel, requiring comfort in industrial settings and adherence to all safety protocols.
