Job Description
The Back Office Medical Assistant Floater provides high-quality, team-based patient care in both clinical and administrative capacities under the direct supervision of clinicians. This role supports clinicians and care management teams in promoting health and wellness, maintaining chronic disease management, and assisting in the examination and treatment of patients. The floater works across multiple clinics, performing full laboratory testing procedures and phlebotomy while flexibly supporting either medical assistant duties or dedicated lab functions in a safe, friendly, and patient-focused environment.
Responsibilities
This role is 100% onsite and requires working across multiple clinic locations. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 7:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The position follows a two-week schedule cycle, with approximately 43.75 hours in Week 1 and 48 hours in Week 2. The Medical Assistant Floater regularly travels between several clinic sites within the same general region, and mileage reimbursement is provided for travel between clinics. When asked to float outside of core locations, a gas card is provided as an additional travel support. The environment is fast-paced, patient-focused, and highly collaborative, with a strong emphasis on safety, universal precautions, and laboratory quality control. The role involves working in exam rooms, back office areas, and laboratory spaces, using phlebotomy equipment, standard clinical instruments, and an electronic medical record system. - Provide team-based patient care under the direct supervision of a clinician, supporting both clinical and administrative functions.
- Assist clinicians and care management teams in assessing patients, maintaining chronic disease management, and supporting examination and treatment activities.
- Perform all laboratory testing procedures accurately and in accordance with laboratory quality control requirements.
- Carry out phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Complete patient intake tasks, including gathering medical history, verifying information, and preparing patients for visits.
- Obtain and document vital signs, including manual vitals when required, and promptly report abnormal findings to the clinician.
- Apply knowledge of basic medical terminology to support accurate documentation and effective communication with the care team.
- Follow universal precaution procedures and medical safety practices to maintain a clean, safe, and compliant clinical environment.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, colleagues, and the public, fostering positive and respectful interactions.
- Assess emergencies as they arise and act appropriately in accordance with clinical protocols and training.
- Float between multiple clinic locations as patient volume and queue demands, adapting to different teams and workflows.
- Work independently while remaining responsible, organized, and aligned with clinic policies and procedures.
- Support both back office medical assistant functions and dedicated lab responsibilities depending on daily assignment and clinic needs.
- Document patient encounters and clinical information accurately in the electronic medical record, following established standards.
- Participate in ongoing training and skill development, including learning or refining manual vital sign techniques as needed.
- High school diploma.
- Medical Assistant diploma or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential, or at least 3 years of experience as a Medical Assistant with corresponding job titles.
- Phlebotomy experience, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
- Ability to obtain vital signs, with manual vital sign skills strongly preferred.
- Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Active driver’s license and ability to travel between clinic locations.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality control requirements.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- Knowledge of universal precaution procedures and medical safety practices.
- Proven phlebotomy skills and comfort working in a lab environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.
